Daojiao Zongzi, the Dongguan Take on the Wrap

道滘裹蒸粽 Dàojiào guǒzhēng zòng, the guozheng zongzi of Daojiao, is a small, layered rice parcel from 道滘镇 Dàojiào zhèn Daojiao Town, a river town in Dongguan’s western water-country: late-crop glutinous rice, peeled mung beans, a whole salted duck egg yolk, pork belly from fat cured twenty-four hours to lose its rankness, seasoned with five-spice, garlic and sand ginger, wrapped in ruo-bamboo leaves and tied hard with Dongguan’s own salty grass, 莞草 guǎn cǎo. It is the town that gives the dish its full name – locally it is simply Daojiao zongzi – and the site’s other guozheng makes the contrast the town’s own pages print: Zhaoqing’s winter-leaf version is a Spring-Festival feast parcel, big enough to slice; Daojiao’s is a small everyday zongzi built yolk by bean by pork. The local comparison runs 肇庆粽吃饱,道滘粽吃巧 – Zhaoqing fills you up, Daojiao rewards you – and this article keeps both dishes in their own towns.

The paperwork is the strongest in the batch. The making technique entered Dongguan’s municipal heritage list in 2010, applied to the province in 2011, and was inscribed in 2012 in Guangdong’s fourth batch of provincial intangible-heritage items – both years carried, application and inscription kept apart. In March 2024 the town’s zongzi was selected into the province’s first geographical-indication cultivation list, eighty products chosen from 258 candidates – a cultivation list, with a national GI application underway, and not yet a geographical indication; the body holds that line exactly. The founding story anchors in the 1930s, when the Daojiao man 叶潮 Ye Chao reworked the fillings at his Chao-ji stall on Xinglong Street – late-crop rice as the base, good salted yolks, Hunan lotus seed 湘莲 xiānglián, cured pork belly – and the stall’s fame grew until admirers in the 1940s were calling it the number-one zongzi under heaven, a nickname the record reports and this text reports as a nickname, never a title. After the war decades the neighbouring Ji-ji shop followed with its own version and the Li brothers refined it; in the 1980s 李志平 Li Zhiping opened the first post-reform zongzi household in town, and in 2010 handed the business to his daughter 李玩章 Li Wanzhang. A separate line runs through 卢细妹 Lu Ximei, born 1959, who learned from her mother 叶领经 Ye Lingjing and was named a provincial representative inheritor in 2014 – her craft is the family line, not the Ye-Chao line, and the two are not merged here.

The industry counts are the town’s own, published through the provincial daily. In 2025 Daojiao ran six zongzi companies and fifty-six certified workshops; the Dragon Boat season wrapped 25.18 million pieces, with the year’s output value expected past 300 million yuan; 780 wrapping posts pulled in more than 2,000 workers at per-head incomes above 15,000 yuan. The season’s wrapping contest put a face on the pace: 叶银欢 Ye Yinhuan of one town workshop folded 31 zongzi in ten minutes for first prize, finished the season at 86,580 pieces and 43,290 yuan in wages. The leading firm, 佳佳美 Jiajiamei – Lu Ximei’s company, a hundred-plus employees, a provincial productive-demonstration base for the heritage technique since 2013, and named in Guangdong’s first batch of time-honoured brands in 2024 – pushes out 80,000 to 100,000 pieces on peak days; a skilled wrapper folds 400 to 500 a day by hand, the fastest 800. Commerce followed: the first town zongzi festival in 2023 signed 5.13 million pieces of orders, the 2025 festival booked 1.2 million yuan on the spot and lifted online sales to a quarter of the trade.

The hand method the heritage file prints: two leaves crossed into a funnel, rice in, then beans, pork and yolk, beans and rice to cap, four more leaves folded over the rim, the grass tied hard, then a long boil. The county gazetteer’s Dragon Boat line sits behind it – on the fifth of the fifth month, calamus and realgar wine, horned millet and dragon-boat racing. The recipe has branched from its two original forms into cheese, aged tangerine peel, curry and a few dozen more, on the inheritor’s own account; the flagship firm adds high-temperature sterilisation and vacuum packs to push shelf life. And the dish carries a food writer’s verdict quoted by the government’s own pages: 蔡澜 Chua Lam, after eating – Daojiao’s zongzi have been good since ancient times; I have never eaten such good zongzi. That is quoted praise, and it stays in quotation marks.

On the ground the dish has buildings now. The Daojiao Guozheng Zongzi Culture Hall opened in June 2023 in the old town food factory’s grounds at 永庆村 Yongqing village – exhibition halls, a dining room and wrapping benches, billed by the town’s own leadership as a cultural landmark. Jiajiamei’s shop and its heritage experience hall take study groups through the craft; the Zhiping family’s house keeps its own production rooms, aunts folding at the tables in season. Prices as of the late-2026 snapshots: fair-stall zongzi run 5 to 10 yuan apiece, boxed brand versions about 15 – a spread the text prints as a spread, stall against box, rather than a single figure.

Words and Names

裹蒸粽 guǒzhēng zòng is the guozheng zongzi, 道滘粽 Dàojiào zòng the local shorthand. 莞草 guǎn cǎo is the Dongguan salty grass the parcels are tied with. 湘莲 xiānglián is the Hunan lotus seed in the classic filling. 老字号 is the time-honoured-brand title, taken into Guangdong’s first provincial batch in 2024. 地理标志培育产品 is the geographical-indication cultivation list – a cultivation list, not a granted GI, and the two words are not interchangeable. 天下第一粽 is the number-one-zongzi-under-heaven nickname of the 1940s, reported, never asserted. And the site’s other parcel stays put: Zhaoqing’s guozheng wraps in winter leaves for the Spring Festival, Daojiao’s wraps small in bamboo leaves for every day.

What the Locals Know

The season is Dragon Boat, but the town eats zongzi all year and the visitor can too. The culture hall at Yongqing village is the first stop – exhibits on the wrap, a table where you fold your own, and a dining room serving the rest of the town’s board: the water town also sends out its meatballs, its rice noodles and its dragon-boat cakes, each a page of its own somewhere else. The calendar is dense: a zongzi culture and consumption fair since 2023, with a market of forty-odd stalls and the wrapping contest on the Nancheng village lawn; a food-culture festival at the year’s turn that filled its floor with heritage foods from nearly thirty provinces, cities and towns.

Buy the way the prices point: loose zongzi from the fair stalls to eat the same day, boxed Jiajiamei or Zhiping parcels to carry – vacuum packs travel, and the box brands print their own dates.

What the record refuses: the under-heaven nickname as a fact; a national geographical indication, which the town does not yet hold, only pursues; a single founding year for the Jiajiamei firm, whose registry, shop and incorporation dates fall in three different years and are printed here as a span, not an anniversary; and any one sales figure that covers both festival orders and seasonal output – those are different counts from different years, and the text keeps them year-tagged.

Stacked bamboo steamers on a tray in a working kitchen, lids waiting for the next round of parcels

flowcloud would say that 道滘裹蒸粽 is a water town’s argument that refinement wraps small – yolk, bean and candled pork in four bamboo leaves, a nickname the 1940s coined that the record still declines to confirm, and a quarter of the trade now moving through a livestream.

Where to find it: the Daojiao Guozheng Zongzi Culture Hall at 永庆村 Yongqing village, 道滘镇 Dàojiào zhèn Daojiao Town, Dongguan – open since June 2023, with wrapping benches and a dining room; Jiajiamei’s shop and heritage hall for boxed parcels; the June fair on the lawn for stall prices. Loose zongzi 5 to 10 yuan and boxed brands about 15 as of the late-2026 snapshots; come at Dragon Boat for the contest, any month for the hall.
