Shīchéng yī jú, gānquán yī shù; dōngrì yī lán, zhīshuǐ yī kǒu. — One orange of the poem city, one tree by the sweet spring; a basket in winter, juice in one mouthful.
Fengjie navel oranges (奉节脐橙, Fèngjié Qíchéng) are the county’s agricultural fame and its standard souvenir: a navel orange grown in the gorge country’s warm valley microclimate, in season through winter, and sold everywhere from the orchard stands to the county-seat markets. For a county whose other products are scenery and history, the orange is the daily one — the crop that pays the county’s farmers through the winter, and the thing visitors carry home by the box.

The orange’s case is geography. The Qutang country’s valleys sit low and warm, with the river moderating the winter cold and the slopes draining the rain — the classic gorge-orange condition, the same reason citrus thrives along the Yangtze’s warmer reaches. The fruit’s local character is the balance: sweet with the acidity kept in, and juicy in a way that lowland storage fruit is not, because the local crop is picked ripe and sold near.

The season is the rule — buy in season, when the local stands are the cheapest and the fruit is picked ripe, and skip the out-of-season packed boxes that are not the same crop. The orchard stands along the county’s valley roads sell by the basket with the tasting first. A box ships home easily and is the county’s most practical souvenir.

flowcloud would say that the poem city’s verses travel badly and its oranges travel perfectly — and that the correct souvenir from a gorge county is the one that fits in a box.
Where to find it: the orchard stands along the county’s valley roads and the county-seat markets — in season, by the basket, tasting first. All checked October 2026.
