Ruby of the Oasis: Pomegranate Season Around Kunyu

正文:石榴园 Shíliu Yuán the pomegranate orchards of the 昆玉市 Kūnyù Shì Kunyu oasis carry the most photogenic crop of the southern route – hard red fruit on thorny bushes, picked in September, split open on market trays to show the ruby seed, and pressed the same day into the pink-red juice that every night stall of the oasis pours over ice. The fruit likes exactly what this belt has: poor sandy soil, brutal sun and stingy water, which is why the thin-skinned local varieties taste sweeter than their size suggests.

The orchards run in low, dense rows – thorny hedges more than trees – and the harvest needs gloves and patience. The pickers move down the rows with shears and crates, leaving the stem stubs long so the fruit keeps; the best fruit goes to the gift trays, the split fruit to the juice press the same day. Watch the light in September: the orchards go deep red at the margins, and the dust of the harvest road hangs gold in the morning sun.

The juice is the local habit. Stalls set up with hand presses – halves of pomegranate crushed on iron cones, the ruby juice running into cups of crushed ice – and a glass costs less than a bus fare, drunk standing in the shade while the pressman opens the next fruit. The seeds themselves, chewed whole in the local style, run tart-sweet with a crunch the dried-tea version keeps all winter: dried pomegranate peel and seed tea is the oasis grandmother’s remedy of first resort.

Beyond the orchards, the same table keeps its other doors: 和田红枣 Hétián Hóngzǎo the red dates for the drying yards, 和田核桃 Hétián Hétáo the walnuts for the kernel sacks, 和田烤蛋 Hétián Kǎo Dàn the roasted eggs for the charcoal rings, and 打馕 Dǎ Náng the naan craft for the oven walls – four more doors into the same 昆玉市 Kūnyù Shì Kunyu City. With the ruby glass settled, our Kunyu travel map fills the days.
