Wuxi Grilled Fish, the Weigh-Then-Grill Street of Mantan Road

Màntānlù shàng yī jiē xiāng, xiānyú xiānchēng; tànhuǒ yī wǎng, yóuxiāng yī lǐ. — One fragrant street on Mantan Road, fresh fish weighed fresh; one net of charcoal, a whole li of oil fragrance.

Wuxi grilled fish (巫溪烤鱼, Wūxī Kǎoyú) is the county’s signature dish, and it has an address: Mantan Road’s grilled-fish street (漫滩路烤鱼一条街) by the old city of Daning, where the shops run as a single trade row. The local custom is choose-and-weigh — the fish is priced by weight after you pick it live — and the cooking follows the regional canon: charcoal first for the char, then the table’s heat with the sauce. The Daning River’s fish is the raw material, the same water that runs the Lingwu Cave’s dark stream.

The weigh-first custom is the honesty of the trade — you choose the live fish, it is weighed, and the price follows the catch, so the bill moves with the season. Locals pick their shop by the charcoal, not the sauce: the good ones turn the fish over the coals in view. The fish street is an evening trade and the whole row fills at dusk; the correct order is the fish plus the county’s highland potatoes for the sauce.

flowcloud would say that the county’s river supplies the fish and the mountain supplies the potatoes — and that Mantan Road is where the two are introduced.

Where to find it: the grilled-fish row on Mantan Road by the old city of Daning — a single trade row that fills at dusk. All checked October 2026.
