忠县柑橘 (Zhōngxiàn Gānjú) — the citrus of Zhōngxiàn — earns the county its proud nickname, the “Three Gorges Orange Township” (三峡橘乡). On the sloping riverbank land above the Yangtze, groves run down toward the water in long terraces, and through the winter and into spring the trees hang heavy with fruit, a stretch of orange against the grey gorge that has become one of the county’s defining sights.

Citrus has deep roots here, and the county has built a real industry around it rather than a few roadside trees. Beyond fresh eating, Zhōngxiàn has developed processing — not least NFC orange juice (非浓缩还原橙汁), pressed and bottled close to the orchards so the fruit barely travels before it becomes drink. Visitors in season can buy fruit straight from roadside stands and village shops, and the better groves let you see the fruit on the branch before you taste it.

The planting follows the land. The sloping 坡地 (pōdì) above the river gives the trees drainage and sun, and the reservoir climate keeps the winter mild enough for late varieties to hold on the tree. Locals speak of the orange the way river towns speak of their water — as something the place is simply known for — and the fruit shows up at markets, in gift boxes sent to Chongqing, and as juice on restaurant tables across the county.

If you come between late autumn and early spring you will catch the groves at their fullest, the hillsides patched with colour and the air around the orchards faintly sweet. The county-seat shops and the stands along the G50 highway approach are the easy places to buy, and a bag of fruit typically costs only a few dozen yuan. The NFC juice, where you find it, is usually priced like a premium local drink rather than a mass-market carton.
