Badaling Area Stays: Wall-Foot Courtyards, Ming Garrison Lanes and S2-Line Dawns of Yanqing District, Beijing
关城月落鸡初唱,一夜山风过垛楼。Guānchéng yuè luò jī chū chàng, yī yè shānfēng guò duǒlóu – The moon drops behind the pass town and the first cock crows; a night of mountain wind crosses the parapets.
The stay around 八达岭 Bādálǐng Badaling is not the wall itself and not a scenic-area hotel compound – it is, plainly put, the village beds that grew up around the pass: the courtyard inns and farmyards of 八达岭镇 Bādálǐng Zhèn Badaling township at the far south of 延庆区 Yánqìng Qū Yanqing District, 北京 Běijīng Beijing, where the Ming wall climbs the ridge above 关城 guānchéng pass, where the 岔道古城 Chàdào Gǔchéng Chadao garrison town still keeps its sixteenth-century walls a kilometre from the ticket gates, where 石峡 Shíxiá Shixia village sits under the wilder 石峡关 Shíxiá Guān section to the west, and where the 京藏高速 Jīngzàng Gāosù Jingzang expressway and 八达岭站 Bādálǐng Zhàn Badaling station on the 市郊铁路S2线 Shìjiāo Tiělù S2 Xiàn S2 suburban line put the quarter inside an hour of the city. Three bands hold the beds: the inns inside 岔道 Chàdào, walk-to-the-gates rooms in rebuilt Ming lanes; the farmyards along the township roads, cheaper and quieter with parking in the yard; and a few glass-fronted lodges on the ridge side. Rooms run from 标间 biāojiān twins to 家庭房 jiātíng fáng family rooms, heated by 暖气 nuǎnqì or a 火炕 huǒkàng.

Call it honestly: ¥300–700 a night in the October 2026 snapshot, and the range tracks distance from the ticket gates almost exactly. A courtyard room inside 岔道 Chàdào runs ¥450–700, a farmyard on the 石峡 Shíxiá road ¥300–450, and the ridge-side lodges with the glass and the view sit at ¥580–700 with breakfast. Weekday October rates are the honest ones; the middle two weekends of the month, when the foliage turns and half of Beijing drives out, go to 1.5–2x and sell out three weeks ahead, and the May Day and National Day weeks are worse still. Winter reverses everything: snow on the wall, almost no queue, and rates down at ¥300–400 midweek, sometimes lower if you telephone rather than book online. Ask whether the room includes the shuttle to the gate and whether breakfast starts before six, since both matter more here than the view; ask, too, whether the courtyard is enclosed, because the wind comes down off the ridge after dark (worth confirming the details for your dates).

The honest star is the hour, not the room. Sleeping at 岔道 Chàdào buys you the wall at half past seven, before the first coach from 德胜门 Déshèngmén Deshengmen has cleared the ring road, and that hour is worth more than any thread count in the district. What gets oversold is the “wall view”, which in practice means a slice of rampart between two roofs, and the “ancient town” language, since 岔道 Chàdào was largely rebuilt in the 2000s on Ming foundations and reads as a film set with real bones underneath. The 农家饭 nóngjiā fàn farmhouse dinners are wholesome and unremarkable – 柴鸡 cháijī stewed chicken, 贴饼子 tiē bǐngzi cornmeal cakes, mountain vegetables – and priced for captives. The courtyards are cold after dark from October, the walls thin between units, the village lanes unlit past nine (worth confirming a torch and a rear room). Judge it as a place to sleep ninety minutes ahead of the crowds and it is excellent value; judge it as a destination in itself and the evening will be long.
The self-aware postscript: a photographer I know books the same 岔道 Chàdào courtyard every October and has never once photographed the village. He leaves at six with a flask, walks the 北八楼 Běi Bālóu North Eighth Tower path while the fog is still sitting in the 关沟 Guān Gōu pass, and is back at the courtyard table by nine for 小米粥 xiǎomǐ zhōu millet porridge and a bowl of pickles, having had the wall more or less to himself. Yanqing holds four other kinds of bed and they are not interchangeable: the town chains at 延庆城区 Yánqìng chéngqū for the errands and the river, the farmyards under 龙庆峡 Lóngqìng Xiá for the gorge and the ice lanterns, the 火炕 huǒkàng rooms at 柳沟 Liǔgōu for the tofu banquet, and the high cool valley at 海坨 Hǎituó for the summer weeks. The wall village is the earliest door; the others open later in the day.
The Stays
- 岔道古城内客栈 Chàdào Gǔchéng nèi kèzhàn inns inside the Chadao old town: ¥450–700 a night, walk-to-the-gates rooms in rebuilt Ming lanes. Who it suits: dawn climbers and couples; who it does not suit: drivers who must park at the door.
- 八达岭镇农家院 Bādálǐng Zhèn nóngjiāyuàn farmyards along the township roads: ¥300–450 a night, courtyard parking and farmhouse dinners included. Who it suits: families and drivers; who it does not suit: anyone who came for a view.
- 石峡方向山居客栈 Shíxiá fāngxiàng shānjū kèzhàn hillside inns toward Shixia: ¥350–550 a night, quiet rooms under the unrestored wall. Who it suits: walkers and photographers; who it does not suit: car-free travellers.
- 长城脚下度假酒店 Chángchéng jiǎoxià dùjià jiǔdiàn resort hotels at the wall’s foot: ¥580–700 a night, full service and a pool five minutes from the gate. Who it suits: families and comfort-first travellers; who it does not suit: budget counters.

flowcloud would say that the wall-foot stay is a bed bought for the dawn – Chadao courtyard to Shixia farmyard in the October 2026 snapshot, ¥300–700 and worth the top of the band on a clear morning – and that the honest move is to sleep inside the old lanes, be at the gates before the coaches, and walk back for porridge, because the hour is the amenity and the tour traffic is the price – the wall keeps the only clock. All checked October 2026.
Where to stay: Choose 岔道古城 Chàdào Gǔchéng if you want the wall at dawn without a car – the S2 station is a short walk and the 八达岭 Bādálǐng ticket gates one stop away. Choose the 石峡 Shíxiá side for a quiet courtyard and a drive. Either way ask about the morning shuttle and whether your host will hold luggage past checkout, which most will. Late-October foliage weekends are the tightest of the year, so book two weeks ahead. All checked October 2026.
