Bohu County Stays: Sleeping by the Western Sea, With the Fishing-Port Lights and Lake Sunrise All Yours
渔港灯火照归客,一梦湖风到晓来 Yúgǎng dēnghuǒ zhào guī kè, yī mèng húfēng dào xiǎo lái – Harbour lamps light the returning guest; lake wind follows the dream till dawn
Bohu County Bóhú Xiàn is the closest home to Bosten Lake: the county town presses against the north shore, an hour’s drive from Korla, and a ten-minute post-dinner walk puts you on the lake embankment. Lodging runs in three kinds – county-town hotels, lakeside resorts, and fisher-family guesthouses – all small in scale but all banking on one word: near. When the day-trip coaches haul everyone back to Korla at dusk, the lake’s sunrise and sunset belong only to those who stayed the night.

County-town hotels cluster along Yugang Road and Renmin Road: a few minutes on foot lands you on the fish-restaurant street, where a same-day lake fish and a bowl of milk tea is the easiest dinner a guest can arrange. Most are two- or three-story buildings run by local owners – nothing luxurious, but clean, well heated, honestly priced, with twin rooms from about 200 yuan. For more polish, choose a lakeside resort or a lake-view room near the scenic area, reed beds and open water outside the window, paying for it with a higher rate and thinner dining options.
Bohu’s seasonal logic is crisp: June through August brings the first peak, swimmers at Golden Sand Beach and lake-circuit road-trippers filling the town; January brings the second, the ice-fishing season, when the fisher guesthouses bundle a 「winter-catch package」 – room plus net-watching plus whole-fish feast at one price. Between the two runs a long shoulder season with rates down a third or more, made for travelers who like the pace slow.
Lake-view rooms reward scrutiny: the west and south shores face the sunset, when the water burns from sapphire to orange-pink – photographers will pay an extra hundred for the right orientation; the north-shore town side catches sunrise, and a ten-minute walk along the embankment finds an open vantage. Before booking, ask the window’s direction and what blocks the floor above – the word 「lake-view」 carries real water in it, and a good sunset angle is worth more than the room grade. Nights cool fast by the lake; even in summer keep a jacket handy, the veteran guest’s tacit rule.
Eating is the county stay’s biggest dividend: whole-fish feasts, grilled perch, and fish-head soup all within walking distance, and the dawn market sells lake fish by the basin – hand it to a small shop by the market for cooking and it lands on the table in twenty minutes. Most fisher-house owners also run rooms; stay with them and their signature dishes come along, and the lake stories at table season the meal better than salt. The county supermarket covers resupply – lake-bound snacks, water, and sunscreen in one pass, no need to run back to Korla.
On booking channels: Bohu’s hotels sit on the big platforms, but high-season lake-view rooms often never reach them – a direct call to the owner locks the room instead. In ice-fishing season book three to five days ahead; on net-hauling days the county’s beds vanish. Drivers should note that parts of the lake-circuit road run unlit at night – if you want the lake at night, sleep beside it, which is the whole reason to stay. Mosquito repellent is hard currency in summer, lake mosquitoes being far less sporting than city ones, and one question about window screens at booking saves a night of scratching.
The shoulder season turns Bohu into slow-travel country: stay two nights – one for the lake circuit, one for nothing at all, just waterbirds rising and landing off the embankment. The town’s quiet is contagious: by nine at night only wind and reed leaves are audible, a silence rare in touristed county towns. Using Bohu as a transit stop on a Xinjiang loop is legal; staying as a destination is the correct way to open this lake.

The Stays
Lake photographers should head straight for the west- and south-shore lakeside lodgings, taking sunset and morning mist in one booking; the convenience-minded stay on Yugang Road in town, with fish restaurants, the dawn market, and a fuel station all inside the walking circle – ten minutes to the lake area, bags dropped, off to eat fish.
Families should pick a county hotel with breakfast and arrange net-hauling pickup with the owner in advance for the ice season – back from the ice, a pot of fish-head soup warms everyone through. High-season weekends make prices jump; a few days’ booking beats door-step luck.
Whichever you pick, confirm heating and hot water – small lakeside buildings run weak water pressure in winter, and a slow-hot-water guesthouse deserves a heads-up call ahead. Choose right, and the lake wind is only white noise for sleep.
