The stay at the 沧源崖画 Cāngyuán Yáhuà Cangyuan cliff paintings – fifteen painted points scattered through the 崖画谷 Yáhuà Gǔ cliff-painting valley on the 勐来 Měnglái side of 沧源佤族自治县 Cāngyuán Wǎzú Zìzhìxiàn, about 20 km from the county seat 勐董 Měngdǒng (worth confirming the exact distance) – is not a stay at the cliff face at all: there is no hotel where the paintings are, and the last 700 metres to the panels are stone steps through a 董棕林 Dǒngzōng lín forest of Jurassic relic palms, walked not driven. Who it suits: archaeology and rock-art travellers, 佤族 Wǎzú culture chasers and everyone pairing the valley with 翁丁 Wēngdīng 40 minutes away; who it does not suit: anyone expecting a resort at the cliff – the paintings are a two-hour morning visit and you sleep in town, 20 km back down the road.
Practical shape: the valley is a morning trip, not a base – drive out from 勐董 Měngdǒng at first light, climb the stone steps to the panels while the light is red, and be back in town for lunch. The honest season is November to April, dry and mild; the rains of June to September are hard on the panels and the paths. Getting here: the 沧源佤山机场 Cāngyuán Wǎshān Jīchǎng airport runs daily one-hour flights from 昆明 Kūnmíng (worth confirming the schedule), 临沧 Líncāng city is about four hours by mountain road (worth confirming the details), and 翁丁 Wēngdīng is about 40 minutes – this is a 边境 biānjìng border county, so carry your ID.
