A Farm Homestay Below Changning's Seal Mountain

A Farm Homestay Below Changning’s Seal Mountain

The carvings start before you expect them. 中国印山 Zhōngguó Yìnshān, China Seal Mountain, near 庙前镇 Miàoqián Zhèn in 常宁市 Chángníng Shì, is a rock hill covered in several thousand impressions of seals — carved into cliff faces, boulders and standing stones by generations of hands, arranged along paths that climb slowly through woodland. It is an odd and slightly wonderful idea, a mountain used as a massive document, and it is one of the least-visited genuinely strange sights in Hunan. Staying nearby means you can walk it in the morning light, before the coach parties, and spend the rest of the day in country that almost nobody visits.

常宁市 Chángníng Shì is a county-level city in the far south of 衡阳 Héngyáng, up against the border with 郴州 Chēnzhōu, and it is still farming country. The accommodation that exists is farmhouse accommodation: 农家乐 nóngjiālè and 家庭旅馆 jiātíng lǚguǎn, family houses with rooms let out, a courtyard with a table under a tree, and a kitchen that cooks from the garden. There are also a couple of small resorts around 天堂山 Tiāntáng Shān and 天堂湖 Tiāntáng Hú, the wooded hill and lake country that makes up most of the district’s protected area, which are more comfortable and slightly more expensive.

Practicalities

Price. A room in a family farmhouse runs roughly ¥100 to ¥250, and a place at the table for dinner adds ¥40 to ¥80; both are among the cheapest you will find anywhere in the province. The small resorts near 天堂山 Tiāntáng Shān ask ¥250 to ¥450 for a considerably more polished room. Almost nothing here is bookable through international platforms, and prices do not move much with the season.

Address. The homestays are spread across the villages around 庙前镇 Miàoqián Zhèn — the township for 中国印山 Zhōngguó Yìnshān — and along the roads towards 天堂山 Tiāntáng Shān in the south of 常宁市 Chángníng Shì. Individual properties tend to be named for the village or the household, and a map is more useful than a street address, because there mostly is not one.

Rooms. Expect a basic but genuinely clean room in a family house: a firm bed, tile floors, an electric blanket for winter, a shared or ensuite bathroom, and hot water that may need asking for. Wi-Fi is unreliable. What you get instead is quiet, a courtyard, food that was picked that morning, and hosts who will tell you which path up the hill has the best carvings. If you need consistency and air conditioning, take the resort near the lake instead.

Getting there. 常宁市 Chángníng Shì is about 50 kilometres south of 衡阳市 Héngyáng Shì, reachable by bus from 衡阳 Héngyáng coach stations in around an hour and a half, or by car on the expressway towards 郴州 Chēnzhōu. The nearest high-speed rail is 耒阳西站 Lěiyáng Xī Zhàn or, on the other line, the stations at 衡阳 Héngyáng. From Changning town, 庙前镇 Miàoqián Zhèn is a further drive of around 40 minutes with no useful public transport, so a car or an arranged transfer is effectively required. Driving yourself is the simplest option by a wide margin, and the roads are quiet.

flowcloud would say that Changning is the kind of place that rewards the traveller who has already seen the famous things and wants a day that nobody else is having.

Where to stay: a farmhouse with a courtyard and a kitchen, in the villages around 庙前镇 Miàoqián Zhèn, and with the owners living on site. Ask whether the room has its own bathroom, whether dinner is included or ordered in advance, and how far the walk to the carvings actually is. Confirm the price in cash terms when you arrive, since few of these places take cards or work through booking sites, and treat the whole arrangement as a stay with a family rather than a hotel booking.
