Chongqing is a municipality of southwest China; Yuzhong is its central district on the peninsula where the Yangtze meets the Jialing River, and 朝天门 Cháotiānmén, Chaotianmen, is the very tip where the two rivers join – the old wharf of the city, now a plaza and a cruise terminal. 重庆来福士 Chóngqìng Láifúshì, Raffles City Chongqing, rises from the tip in eight sail-shaped towers, and across the tops of four of them, 250 metres up, lies the 水晶连廊 Shuǐjīng Liánláng, the Crystal sky bridge – 300 metres long, 32.5 metres wide, about 12,000 tonnes of steel, reported by China News Service as the country’s first “horizontal skyscraper”. This piece is about sleeping inside that skyline: a tower hotel at one end, a stack of high-floor sky hotels in the office towers just behind, and the night boats on the water below. Its thesis is vertical: in Chaotianmen the floor you sleep on decides which river you see.
The facts of the building first, because they are the reason any of this is bookable. Raffles City Chongqing was developed by CapitaLand at a total investment of 24 billion yuan and a floor area of about 1.12 million square metres: a mall, grade-A offices, about 1,400 homes, serviced apartments, and an InterContinental hotel inside the complex – its exact door plate best taken from the order page, since the platforms and the developer describe the address differently. The observation deck at the sky bridge, the 探索舱 Tànsuǒcāng, Exploration Deck, opened to the public on 30 May 2020, and in 2023 it became Chongqing’s first and only member of the World Federation of Great Towers, as the developer and the city daily both record. At street level the mall holds one of the city’s earliest refund-on-the-spot counters for departure tax refunds – the district has 134 registered refund stores, the most in the city – and the national transit policy allows qualifying foreign travellers 240 hours visa-free.
Behind the towers, one office building shows what the market does with altitude. At 光控朝天门中心 Guāngkòng Cháotiānmén Zhōngxīn, the Guangkong Chaotianmen Center, No. 1 新华路 Xīnhuá Lù, Xinhua Road, an October 2026 snapshot counts four sky hotels on four floors of the same tower: voco on the thirteenth floor from about 618 yuan a night, 世野SEYA Shìyě SEYA, SEYA, on the thirtieth from about 1,195, 英迪逊 Yīngdíxùn, Indition, on the thirty-eighth from about 528, and 麦悦 Màiyuè, Mc Maiyue, on the forty-fourth from about 899 – four brands, a near three-fold spread, the floor doing the work of the star rating. Beside them stand the Atour River View on the twenty-sixth floor of 45-47 Xinhua Road from about 808, and, at the top of the band, the InterContinental inside Raffles City from about 1,550, its five-star tag the platform’s own label rather than an official rating. One naming wrinkle is worth a warning: several listings carry a Jiefangbei label while standing clearly on the Chaotianmen side, so book by the door plate and the map pin.
Below the windows, the wharf still works. The Two Rivers night cruises, 两江游 Liǎngjiāng Yóu, run on the district’s fleet of eight vessels by the 2025 statistical bulletin’s count, boarding at the Chaotianmen wharf at 1 朝东路 Cháodōng Lù, Chaodong Road, or at the Hongyadong wharf up the Jialing side; an October 2026 snapshot priced the classic night runs from about 130 to 158 yuan, the daytime runs from about 68 and the Jinbi fleet at about 118 to 119, with schedules and fares governed by the wharf’s notices on the day. From the deck the confluence explains itself: where the two rivers meet, the difference in their sediment often draws a visible line across the water, clearer in some seasons than others. For a guest the point is simpler: the boat is downstairs and there is no last metro to chase. Above the rooms, the Exploration Deck sells the same altitude for a ticket – about 198 yuan in the same snapshot, its add-on experiences priced on the purchase page, which governs – and the comparison is honest: the view can be bought for 198, but the room rate at altitude writes it into every hour of the night instead of three.
Three boundaries place the piece. Against this batch’s Jialing-side piece: that one rents a view of the skyline from across the water; this one sleeps inside the skyline itself, stacked between a cruise terminal and a 250-metre sky bridge. Against the Chimelong Hengqin Bay Hotel, covered elsewhere on this site: that is a themed resort beside a land border, and this is a vertical city block above a river confluence. And against the Dongguan Guomao piece: Dongguan’s flagship reads a manufacturing city’s business market, and Chaotianmen’s reads a confluence – two rivers, a wharf, and a bridge of buildings laid across four towers.
What the Rooms Are Like
The rooms are priced by altitude twice over: once by the floor, as the four-brand tower demonstrates, and once by the facing, since the rivers bend around the tip and a room can hold the confluence, one river, or the city behind. The common categories are high-floor river-view king and twin rooms behind floor-to-ceiling glass, with top-floor view rooms at the premium end; the InterContinental inside Raffles City is of international five-star scale, though its exact room count is not confirmed in government or operator sources. Two confirmations earn their cost before booking: the floor, in numbers rather than adjectives, because the near three-fold spread inside a single tower is a floor-by-floor fact; and the facing, stated as confluence, Yangtze or Jialing. Ask, too, whether the rate includes any access to the observation level, since the ticket and the room rate are sold separately.
Practicalities
Price. Getting there. Metro 朝天门 Cháotiānmén, Chaotianmen, on Line 1 – the eastern terminus of the line’s 2020 extension – is the nearest station, with 小什字 Xiǎoshízì, Xiaoshizi, on Lines 1 and 6, an honest walk away; Line 3, reached by transfer, runs to the North station and the airport Terminal 2. Trains run roughly 06:30 to 23:00 with announced holiday extensions. The Two Rivers boats board at the Chaotianmen wharf, 1 Chaodong Road, or the Hongyadong wharf, with the day’s schedule and fare at the wharf; walking times are best measured by navigation on the day.
Where to stay: a mid-floor sky-hotel room from about 618 yuan if the wharf and the boats are the point, the tower’s higher floors from about 899 to 1,195 if the altitude itself is the point, and the InterContinental from about 1,550 if the address inside the sails is the point – because at 朝天门 Cháotiānmén, Chaotianmen, the floor decides the river, and the boat leaves from downstairs either way.
