You can walk to the beach here in three minutes from a decent hotel, and you can walk to a dozen restaurants on the way back. 大东海 (Dàdōnghǎi, “Big East Sea”) is the closest big beach to the centre of Sanya, and it is the bay that makes the best of both worlds: real sand and clear water, with the city’s life at your back.
If 三亚湾 is the long westward sunset bay and 亚龙湾 is the resort strip, 大东海 is the neighbourhood beach — the one that is right in the middle of things, that fills with locals and visitors on a weekend, and that is the easiest place in Sanya to just stay and be.
The Convenient Crescent
Dadonghai sits on a crescent-shaped cove on the eastern edge of central Sanya, right where the city meets the sea. It is the beach that is closest to the urban centre, and its great advantage is that simple fact: you are not in a resort zone, you are in the city, and the beach is at the end of your street.
The beach itself is a good-sized crescent of sand, backed by palm trees and a strip of cafés, bars and restaurants. The water is clear and the cove shape keeps it calm, which makes it one of the easier bays in Sanya to swim. The honest version: Dadonghai is not the most beautiful beach in Sanya, and it is not the most luxurious place to stay. The sand is good, the water is clear and swimmable, and the cove is pretty, but it does not have the dazzling turquoise and fine powder of 亚龙湾.
What it has instead is convenience and life. It is the beach that is genuinely in the city, and the staying that is genuinely affordable. You trade the postcard and the private resort for walking distance to everything and a much lower bill.
The other side of that is that it is busy. Dadonghai is the beach that people actually use, and it fills up, especially on weekends and in the evening. It is a lively, social beach rather than a quiet one.
The Sunset at the Point
A short way along the coast from the beach is 鹿回头, the headland that gives Sanya its favourite viewing spot. From the top you get a wide view back over the bay, and at sunset it is one of the best places on the island to watch the light go. It is a ten-minute call from Dadonghai, and it is worth doing while you are based here.
