The 苍山脚 Cāngshān Jiǎo Cangshan foot is the band of villages and newer builds between the old town’s west wall and the reserve line – a stay that trades the lake view for the mountain: rooms facing the peaks and the morning cloud belt, a few degrees cooler than the plain in summer, and quiet. The October 2026 snapshot runs about 150-600 for guesthouses and small hotels, with villas and 庄园 zhuāngyuán estate rooms up to 1,000-plus. The anchor is 寂照庵 Jìzhào Ān Jizhao nunnery on the slope above 感通寺 Gǎntōng Sì – a vegetarian convent full of succulents with a simple 素斋 sùzhāi lunch (commonly quoted at 20 yuan a head, lunch 11:30-13:00), open 07:00-19:00. The trade is air and quiet for convenience: the lake and the bars are a short ride downhill. The honest shape is that you sleep on the Cangshan side and eat at the nunnery.
The geography explains the trade. This side of the old town faces east across the wall to the lake, so the sunset is behind Cangshan – what you buy is the 山景 shānjǐng mountain view and the cloud sea, not the water. The 214国道 Èryāosì Guódào / 西景线 Xījǐng Xiàn west road runs the length of the foot, with the 感通索道 Gǎntōng Suǒdào station at the south end and 三月街 Sānyuè Jiē – the fairground of the great third-lunar-month fair – in the middle, and the 洗马潭 Xǐmǎtán summit line at the north. The band is newer stock than the old town, more holiday-housing than courtyard, and the comparison with a 古城客栈 Gǔchéng Kèzhàn is exact: the old town has the character, the foot has the air.
Practical shape: a car or scooter helps, since the useful addresses sit along the west road and up the slope, though the old town runs 10-yuan shuttles to 感通索道 Gǎntōng Suǒdào and 寂照庵 Jìzhào Ān (check the current timetable). Ask two questions when booking: does the room face 苍山 Cāngshān or the village, and does it have heat for winter – the slope is colder than the plain. Two nights works, and the day has a shape: ropeway or nunnery in the morning, lunch at the 素斋 sùzhāi hall (arrive early, it closes when the food is gone), old town for the evening. The 三月街 Sānyuè Jiē fair week, in the third lunar month, is the one time the foot is busy – book ahead or avoid it. This is the summer-cooler stay and the hiker’s stay, not the nightlife stay. Upscale (≈695 yuan): 大理依山海庄园 Yīshānhǎi Zhuāngyuán Yishanhai estate (大理镇 Dàlǐ Zhèn 七里桥 Qīlǐ Qiáo 感通寺 Gǎntōng Sì 02, from about 695 yuan, 4.9) is the 庄园 zhuāngyuán tier – mountain-view suites by the nunnery gate, with villas and whole-estate rentals above it up to 1,000-plus. The honest shape is that the foot’s upscale tier is an estate room with a view, and the 素斋 sùzhāi lunch up the slope is the reason the address matters.
