Weishan: Rooms in the Old Nanzhao Capital

拱辰楼下,一碗饵丝。Gǒngchén lóu xià, yīwǎn ěrsī – Below the Gongchen tower, one bowl of er si.

巍山古城 Wēishān Gǔchéng Weishan Old Town is the town Dali was – the old 蒙化城 Měnghuà Chéng, walled in Ming Hongwu 23 (1390) on the ground where 南诏 Nánzhào began, and named to the third batch of national historic-and-cultural cities in January 1994. The grid is the exhibit: two dozen streets and eighteen lanes in a chessboard plan, anchored by the 拱辰楼 Gǒngchén Lóu Gongchen tower at the north end and the 星拱楼 Xīnggǒng Lóu star-cupola tower at the centre, with the 南诏古街 Nánzhào Gǔjiē Nanzhao old street – the only 中国历史文化名街 Zhōngguó Lìshǐ Wénhuà Míngjiē historic street of that grade in Yunnan. Stays are cheap: the October 2026 snapshot runs about 100-300 for courtyard inns inside the grid and 400-800 for the top rooms. The honest shape is a living town, not a resort.

The reason to sleep here is the food and the quiet. 巍山 Wēishān is a real county town – 巍山彝族回族自治县 Wēishān Yízú Huízú Zìzhìxiàn – where the 饵丝 Ěrsī noodle bowl (ask for 扒肉饵丝 Pāròu Ěrsī with pork), the 一根面 Yīgēn Miàn one-long-noodle birthday strand and the 蜜饯 Mìjiàn candied fruit are local institutions with old shops attached, and the 巍宝山 Wēibǎo Shān Taoist hill – a national forest park and the mountain where the Nanzhao founders are honoured at the 巡山殿 Xúnshān Diàn – is the day trip above the town. The town sits lower and warmer than the Dali plain, about 70 km south of 下关 Xiàguān, reached by bus in about two hours or by rail on the 大临 Dàlín Dali-Lincang line (a few D-trains a day, Dali to Weishan in about half an hour). The 巍山 Wēishān basin is also 红河 Hóng Hé headwater country, and the old town’s water still runs in the lanes the way the Ming planners drew it. The comparison with 大理古城 Dàlǐ Gǔchéng is exact: same province, one-tenth the noise.

Practical shape: sleep inside the grid for walkability – the towers, the 文华书院 Wénhuá Shūyuàn academy and the snack street are all on foot – and expect basic-to-mid rooms: the stock is converted Ming-Qing houses and small hotels, so check hot water and heat rather than expecting design. Eat at the 小吃街 Xiǎochī Jiē snack street by the towers, where the 饵丝 Ěrsī bowls are the benchmark price, and give the town two nights: one for the grid and the food, one for 巍宝山 Wēibǎo Shān. The honest pairing is a Dali old-town stay for the lake and a Weishan night for the bowl, and check the rail timetable and room rates before you commit. Park outside the grid and walk in, the way the town was meant to be entered.

Where to stay: inside 巍山古城 Wēishān Gǔchéng near the 拱辰楼 Gǒngchén Lóu and 星拱楼 Xīnggǒng Lóu towers; give a driver 南诏镇 Nánzhào Zhèn (the old town’s town district) or a tower name, since the grid is pedestrian-scaled. All checked October 2026.

The Stays

Budget (≈100–300 yuan): 雅洁客栈 Yǎjié Yajie inn (南诏镇 Nánzhào Zhèn 上水坝 Shàngshuǐbà 13, from about 124 yuan, 4.8, 86 reviews), 神骏客栈 Shénjùn Shenjun inn (巍山古城星拱楼店 Xīnggǒng Lóu, 环城东路 Huánchéng Dōng Lù, from about 143 yuan, 4.5, 63 reviews), and 巍山老馆·古城精品客栈 Lǎoguǎn Laoguan boutique inn (拱辰楼店 Gǒngchén Lóu, 东新街 Dōngxīn Jiē 59, from about 192 yuan, 4.8, 103 reviews) are the stock inside the grid – converted Ming-Qing houses and small hotels, basic-to-mid, so check hot water and heat rather than expecting design. The honest floor runs lower still: 巍山名邦客栈 Míngbāng Mingbang inn (东新街 Dōngxīn Jiē 17, from about 74 yuan, 4.0, 44 reviews) sits by the 拱辰楼 Gǒngchén Lóu, and the 饵丝 Ěrsī bowl at seven is the reason the road south is worth it.

Upscale (≈400–800 yuan): 喜舍·Nanzhao Courtyard 设计师花园民宿 Xǐshè Xishe designer garden inn (巍山古城星拱楼店 Xīnggǒng Lóu, 古城南街 Gǔchéng Nán Jiē 9, rooms from about 375 yuan, 4.9, 243 reviews) is the top tier – a designed garden courtyard by the central tower, the grid’s one stay that prices like a city boutique. The honest shape is that the top rooms here cost what a mid-range room costs in Dali, and the towers are the view.

Getting there: sleep inside the 巍山古城 Wēishān Gǔchéng grid near the 拱辰楼 Gǒngchén Lóu and 星拱楼 Xīnggǒng Lóu towers – the town sits about 70 km south of 下关 Xiàguān, reached by bus in about two hours or by rail on the 大临 Dàlín Dali-Lincang line to 巍山站 Wēishān Zhàn (a few D-trains a day, Dali to Weishan in about half an hour). Park outside the grid and walk in, the way the town was meant to be entered; give a driver 南诏镇 Nánzhào Zhèn (the old town’s town district) or a tower name, since the grid is pedestrian-scaled. The towers, the 南诏古街 Nánzhào Gǔjiē and the 小吃街 Xiǎochī Jiē snack street are free and open (checked October 2026, subject to change).

Stone-paved street of Weishan old town lined with traditional rooftops and potted plants, leading to a distant tower, no people and no readable text in frame

flowcloud would say that Weishan is the town Dali was – 蒙化城 Měnghuà Chéng, the Gongchen tower, a 100-yuan room and a bowl of 饵丝 Ěrsī at seven – and that the honest move is to sleep inside the grid for two nights, because the rooms are cheap and the noodle bowl is the reason the road south is worth it. All checked October 2026.

Where to stay: inside 巍山古城 Wēishān Gǔchéng (南诏镇 Nánzhào Zhèn) near the 拱辰楼 Gǒngchén Lóu and 星拱楼 Xīnggǒng Lóu towers – budget 雅洁客栈 Yǎjié (~124 yuan, 4.8), 神骏客栈 Shénjùn (~143 yuan, 4.5), 老馆精品客栈 Lǎoguǎn (~192 yuan, 4.8), top rooms 喜舍·Nanzhao Courtyard Xǐshè (古城南街 Gǔchéng Nán Jiē 9, from ~375 yuan, 4.9); reach by bus from 下关 Xiàguān (about two hours) or the 大临 Dàlín rail line to 巍山站 Wēishān Zhàn (a few D-trains a day, about half an hour from Dali); park outside the grid and walk in (checked October 2026, subject to change).
