A Night Beside the Old French Barracks

Chongqing is a municipality of southwest China, and 南岸区 Nán’àn Qū, Nan’an District, ends at its eastern tip in 弹子石 Dànzǐshí, Danzishi, where the Jialing River meets the Yangtze and the south bank looks straight at the old city’s river gate. Legend gives the place its name: the story runs that the consort of 大禹 Dà Yǔ, Yu the Great, waited on this shore and bore a son, and the birth stone – 诞子石 dànzǐshí, the born-son stone – blurred over the centuries into the modern name. The legend is told as one, but the wharf it explains is documented history: this was a working water-and-land landing for centuries before it was a neighbourhood, and a night here means the confluence, the rebuilt old street for an evening, and the river running past the window toward the river gate opposite.

Danzishi Old Street climbs 80 metres of hillside in terraced steps, rebuilt and reopened in 2018 on a wharf that predates it all.

The wharf’s working past survives in the street’s restored place names. 王家沱 Wángjiātuò, Wangjia Tuo, the family wharf next door, was a known landing by the Qianlong reign of the Qing; and the 海关石 Hǎiguānshí, Customs Rock, boundary stone of the imperial maritime customs, was known to boatmen as the first gate of the upper Yangtze. The old street above the landing reopened on 1 June 2018 as 长嘉汇弹子石老街 Chángjiāhuì Dànzǐshí Lǎojiě, the Changjiahui Danzishi Old Street at 68 Taichang Road – about 120,000 square metres of terraced lanes climbing some 80 vertical metres, laid out on the plan remembered as one street, two wharfs, four courtyards and ten sights, with the Wang family compound and the old courtyards written back into the steps.

The street’s official standing came quickly. In September 2017 it was approved as a national 4A scenic area – the country’s first 4A listing themed on treaty-port culture – and in 2021 it entered the first national list of night culture-and-tourism consumption clusters. Today’s tenants mix the historical and the family-friendly: a Madame Tussauds wax museum and a Sea Life aquarium sit inside the terraces, theatres and night-market stalls fill the levels between, and the top steps look out over the confluence itself. For a guest the effect is a neighbourhood that stays lit and fed until late without leaving its own stairs.

The French Navy barracks of 1902-03, a Chinese-French courtyard compound, is the oldest building on the street.

The neighbourhood’s oldest building is the reason for this piece’s title. The 法国水师兵营 Fǎguó Shuǐshī Bīngyíng, French Navy barracks, at 142 Qiantai Lane, was begun in 1902 and finished in 1903 by its own stone record – a Chinese-French brick-and-timber courtyard compound of about 1,600 square metres, with a French-language chronicle stone set in its walls; after the 1911 revolution it served as premises of the French consulate. Restored, it stands as the front landmark of the quarter, and the hotels that followed it onto the bank trade on the same river frontage the marines were sent to watch.

The beds here are a compact market anchored on one address. The 重庆南滨路智选假日酒店 Chóngqìng Nánbīnlù Zhìxuǎn Jiàrì Jiǔdiàn, the Holiday Inn Express Chongqing Nanbin Road, at 152 Nanbin Road, quoted from about 491 yuan in an October 2026 snapshot for a standalone first-line river-view building, the confluence end’s dependable mid-band room. West along the riverfront sit the Sheraton’s twin gold towers at 78 Nanbin Road, the full-service anchor, whose story belongs to the Nanbin Road article; east toward the old street, the Atour at 69 Nanbin Road covers the smart-mid band. In an October 2026 snapshot the confluence band ran from about 491 to past 990 yuan a night, every figure a snapshot that floats.

Practicalities

Price. In an October 2026 platform snapshot the confluence end ran from about 491 to past 990 yuan a night: the Holiday Inn Express anchor from about 491, smart-mid rooms in between, and the full-service towers west along the road from about 990. River-view and confluence-view rooms on holiday weekends book out first and lift hardest. Prices fluctuate seasonally; check current rates, and treat every figure as a snapshot that floats.

Address. 重庆市南岸区弹子石街道 Zhōngqìng Shì Nán’àn Qū Dànzǐshí Jiēdào, Danzishi Subdistrict, Nan’an District, Chongqing – the old street at 泰昌路 68 号 Tàichāng Lù 68 Hào, 68 Taichang Road, the barracks at 谦泰巷 142 号 Qiāntài Xiàng 142 Hào, 142 Qiantai Lane, and the hotel line along the lower reaches of 南滨路 Nánbīn Lù, Nanbin Road, at 152 and westward.

Rooms. Two products share the bank: mid-band chain rooms in the standalone river-view building at 152 Nanbin Road, and the full-service and smart-mid stock of the wider Nanbin line within a short taxi radius. Confirm facing – confluence, bridge or city side – on the order page. Exact room counts are not confirmed in government or operator sources, so any precise figure is the platform’s own.

Getting there. Metro 弹子石 Dànzǐshí, Danzishi, on the Loop line, is about 800 metres on foot from the old street, and buses including the 338 and 373 serve the 长嘉汇 Chángjiāhuì, Changjiahui, stops; a taxi from the Yuzhong side crosses the Dongshuimen bridge in about 10 minutes. The Changjiahui retail complex runs an underground car park – confirm opening hours and tariffs on site – and the hotels along the road keep their own lots with terms to confirm per property.

Below the street, the Jialing joins the Yangtze at the confluence locals once called the river’s front door.

A night here has a built-in script. Check in, walk the nine terraces while the day-trippers thin out, and let the street’s own levels do the evening – wax museums and aquariums for the children, courtyards and chronicle stones for the historians, skewers for everyone. After dark the bridges light up river-left and river-right, the ferries of the old landing stay gone, and the street stays lit while the wharf sleeps.

flowcloud would say that Danzishi is the only address in Chongqing where the legend is on the plaque, the customs stone is on the waterfront and the barracks is on the way to breakfast, and that the correct way to sleep here is in the river-view room at 152 with the window cracked, because the two rivers have been rehearsing this confluence for a few thousand years and the light show is theirs, not the hotel’s.

Where to stay: the Holiday Inn Express from about 491 yuan if the confluence and the mid-band price are the point, the smart-mid Atour a short taxi west if the old street and the river both matter, and the full-service towers from about 990 if the evening wants a lobby – because at 弹子石 Dànzǐshí, Danzishi, you are sleeping at the front door of two rivers, and the door has been open a very long time.
