Wukang is the practical base: county-town hotels by the station, twenty minutes from the mountain gate, with the night markets and the high-speed link to Hangzhou. The villages hold the romance: wetland-edge lodges where the morning is birdsong and boat engines, and the old-town guesthouses of Xinshi where the canal runs under Ming shopfronts and the night lamps reflect all the way down the water.

A Deqing base runs the county’s standard triangle: wetland boat at dawn when the ibis feed, lunch in Xinshi on the canal, the mountain villas or Sword Pool gorge in the cool of the afternoon. The county’s high-speed stations put Hangzhou twenty minutes out – which is why Deqing’s beds fill with weekenders who want the mountain’s quiet without the mountain’s price.
