Sleeping Inside the Old County Seat of Ding’an
定安故城 Dìng’ān Gùchéng, the old county seat, stands in 定城镇 Dìngchéng Zhèn, the county town of 定安县 Dìng’ān Xiàn, on the bank of the 南渡江 Nándù Jiāng, and the national heritage administration calls it the only relatively intact county wall left on the island. The old city means the wall, the yamen, the arcaded lanes and 亚元巷 Yàyuán Xiàng together. Outside it, along 见龙大道 Jiànlóng Dàdào, the new district of 塔岭 Tǎlǐng has grown up beside the motorway exit. The county says it wants to polish its name card as a historic and cultural city; it is not on the national list of such cities, whose Hainan entries are 海口 and 琼山, and the claim used below is the heritage authority’s own.
Inside the wall there is no grand hotel, and the reason is a heritage rule rather than a lack of ambition. The national heritage administration has told the county to investigate before it builds and to avoid demolishing and rebuilding or putting up imitation facades, so that the wall keeps its integrity. What fills the gap is a dense, cheap trade in old guesthouses and flats let by the night. 三贤庄宾馆 Sānxiánzhuāng Bīnguǎn on 文体东路 averages 78 yuan and sits 406 metres from the bus station; 仙都宾馆 is 130 metres away and 燕鲸宾馆 76; 群星宾馆 on 见龙大道 is 34 metres from the station gate. The rest of the stock runs from about 78 to 150 yuan.
The modern half of the town is where the business hotels are, strung along 见龙大道 by the 东线高速 Dōngxiàn Gāosù exit. 海旅春阳大酒店 Hǎilǚ Chūnyáng Dàjiǔdiàn, at 608 见龙大道 in 塔岭新区, leads the county’s large hotels with 558 reviews at 9.2 out of 10, an outdoor pool, a gym, a banquet hall and a car park with charging bays; it was listed from about 348 yuan on 29 September 2026 and 341 to 351 elsewhere. 丽景度假酒店 Lǐjǐng Dùjià Jiǔdiàn, at 645 见龙大道, opened in 2020 and was renovated in 2023, has 50 rooms in six types and 40 parking spaces with chargers, and its 370 to 398 reviews sit at 9.4, the highest score in the county. 定安春阳假日酒店, the old banquet house at 602, is the value end at about 146 yuan.
Between those two poles is everything else, and the spread is the point. The chains have arrived in the new district, a 汉庭 Hàntíng at 157 yuan and a 如家派柏·云 at 115, while the apartments in residential compounds let whole by the night, 云民宿 at 4.7, 诚心民宿 and 闲居怡然民宿, sit between the two markets at about 100 to 200 yuan. The county operates no star register that matches any of this: 海旅春阳 carries a four-star label from the platforms and 丽景 a two-star one, and neither comes with a government grading, so the honest reading is that the numbers on the sites are the only numbers there are.
What the Rooms Are Like
A room in 定城镇 divides by age, and the old city’s rooms are the more interesting purchase. Expect a firm bed, an air conditioner, a kettle and a small tiled bathroom, a window on a lane or on a light well, and a proprietor at a desk in the lobby; do not expect a lift in the older houses or a car park on 亚元巷. The new district gives you the opposite: a lift, a buffet breakfast, a pool at one hotel and a car park with a charger, which is why the electric-car drivers who write reviews single out 丽景 for leaving them with no charging anxiety. The county is wet from May to October and comfortable from November to April.
Practicalities
Price. On 29 September 2026 the county town ran from 78 to about 348 yuan a night. The old guesthouses were the bottom of it: 三贤庄 at about 78, 金迪宾馆 at 82, 兰亭季 at 117, 旺安 at 138 and 馨牡丹 at 148, with the apartments between 100 and 200. In 塔岭 the chains came in at 115 to 157, 定安春阳假日 at about 146, 丽景 at about 232 and 海旅春阳 at about 341 to 351. Guides give the same shape in rounder numbers, telling travellers to sleep in the county town for 100 to 150 yuan and drive the half hour to the sights rather than paying 250 to 350 at a guesthouse beside them.
Address. The stays are in 定城镇 Dìngchéng Zhèn, 定安县 Dìng’ān Xiàn: the old guesthouses in the lanes inside and around the wall, on 新兴街, 和平南路, 文体东路, 沿江二路 and 大众中路, and the business hotels along 见龙大道 in 塔岭新区, within a kilometre of 见龙塔 Jiànlóng Tǎ and the county museum. 定安汽车站 Dìng’ān Qìchēzhàn is in the town, written in one source as 大众中路 8 号 and in another as 见龙大道 178 号, a disagreement this article reports rather than settles.
Rooms. Ask which 定城镇 you are in, because the old city and 塔岭 are a couple of kilometres apart and only one of them is next to the wall. Ask whether there is a lift and a car park, since the old lanes were laid out for carts. Ask about the window, because the shophouse conversions rent rooms that open on a light well. And ask where to park if you are driving out to 仙沟 Xiāngōu, the beef street about eight kilometres away, which is the best dinner in the county and takes no reservations.
Getting there. There is no railway station in 定安县 Dìng’ān Xiàn, so ignore any itinerary that promises a train to a Ding’an station, because the island’s high-speed line does not come here. The way in is 海口东站 Hǎikǒu Dōng Zhàn, 48 kilometres away by coach between 05:50 and 20:30, or 海口美兰国际机场 Hǎikǒu Měilán Guójì Jīchǎng, served by a direct bus from the county bus station that opened before the 2022 Spring Festival travel rush and runs eight return trips a day between 9:10 and 16:30. Both take about 40 minutes by car, and the airport is quoted at 31, 40.4 or 50 kilometres depending on the source.
Where to stay: a room at 丽景度假酒店 Lǐjǐng Dùjià Jiǔdiàn on 见龙大道 Jiànlóng Dàdào in 塔岭新区 if you want a charger and the best reviews in the county, a suite at 海旅春阳大酒店 if you want the pool, and a 78-yuan room off 亚元巷 Yàyuán Xiàng if you would rather spend the money on 定安粽子 and the beef street, every one of them in 定城镇 Dìngchéng Zhèn, 定安县 Dìng’ān Xiàn, with the wall, the yamen museum, the pagoda and the arcade lane all inside a couple of kilometres.
