A Lodge in the Forest Below Dinghu Mountain

The road up the valley stops at the lodge, and above it there is only forest. 鼎湖山 Dǐnghú Shān is the mountain east of 肇庆 Zhàoqìng, one of the four famous mountains of 岭南 Lǐngnán and a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and it is genuinely forested rather than planted: the reserve holds a remnant of the primary evergreen broadleaf woodland that once covered the whole delta, and the species list reads like a botanical garden. A handful of small lodges and guesthouses sit inside the lower part of the reserve and along the approach road, and staying in one means that the trails, the streams and the temple start at the end of the drive rather than two hours away. The air is the other argument: the temperature drops several degrees on the way up, and the noise of the city simply stops.

The mountain is also a working religious site. 庆云寺 Qìngyún Sì, the temple partway up, has been a centre of Cantonese Buddhism for centuries and is the origin of 鼎湖上素 Dǐnghú shàngsù, the vegetarian dish that carries the mountain’s name across the province. Below it are the 飞水潭 Fēishuǐ Tán waterfall and the pools that supply the spring water sold in bottles all over Guangdong, and above it the trails continue into closed reserve where access is restricted. The 鼎湖 Dǐnghú, the lake the mountain is named after, sits near the top of the visited section.

What the Rooms Are Like

These are small properties, usually family-run, with between six and twenty rooms, and the standard is homely rather than polished. Rooms are plain, with tile floors, a hard bed, a split air-conditioning unit and a bathroom with a shower; the better ones have a balcony over the stream or the trees. What they lack in finish they make up for in position, and in most cases in the cooking, which is often the family’s own kitchen serving 走地鸡 zǒudìjī, free-range chicken, and vegetables from the slope. Damp is the thing to check: a valley this wet means that a room at the bottom of the site, close to the water and under trees, can feel cold and clammy even in summer.

Practicalities

Price. A double runs roughly ¥180 to ¥450 a night, and the range reflects the room and the season rather than any hotel star rating. Rates are highest at weekends in spring, when Guangzhou comes up to walk, and at the 重阳 Chóngyáng and 春节 Chūnjié holidays. Some properties charge more for a room with a balcony over the water.

Address. The lodges are on the approach road and in the lower part of 鼎湖山 Dǐnghú Shān, in the 鼎湖区 Dǐnghú Qū east of 肇庆市 Zhàoqìng Shì, above the main car park and below the temple. The exact position matters: a lodge inside the reserve gate is a different proposition from one on the road outside it.

Rooms. Ask whether the property is inside the reserve gate or outside, because that decides whether you need a ticket to reach your room. Ask for a room on the upper floor and away from the stream if the noise would keep you awake, or towards it if it would not. Confirm that the bathroom is en suite and that the air conditioning both heats and cools, since winter nights up here are cold and wet.

Getting there. 鼎湖山 Dǐnghú Shān is about forty minutes by taxi from central 肇庆 Zhàoqìng and around twenty-five minutes from 肇庆东站 Zhàoqìng Dōng Zhàn. Local buses run from the city to the mountain gate, from where a shuttle or a taxi takes you up the valley. If you drive, note that private cars are restricted on the upper road at busy times and you may be asked to use the park shuttle.

flowcloud would say that a night in the forest here is bought for the morning, since the mist sits in the valley until the sun is well up and the birds are noisiest in the half hour before that.

Where to stay: in a small lodge inside the lower reserve or on the approach road of 鼎湖山 Dǐnghú Shān, above the car park and below 庆云寺 Qìngyún Sì. Confirm whether the property is inside the gate, ask for an upper-floor room with the bathroom en suite, and plan to be on the trail before eight, when the valley is still cool and the tour groups have not yet arrived.
