Summit of Three Gorges Stay

Sānxiá zhī diān, yún hǎi de yī yè — At the Summit of the Three Gorges, a night above the clouds.

The hilltop guesthouses and camping grounds cling to the slopes above Shimiao village, the base for the Sanxia Zhidian cable car, and they trade everything lowland for the one thing you cannot get in town: the gorge laid out far below. From a room up here, or a tent on the ridge, you wake above the cloud sea, with the Yangtze a silver thread threading Qutang Gorge a thousand metres beneath your window and Red Armor Mountain standing sharp against the dawn. These are simple stays — a mountain guesthouse, a farmstead with a panorama suite, a camping pad on the grass — run by villagers who know the cable-car times and the best hour for the light. A room typically runs 120 to 480 yuan, with a few glass-walled panorama suites higher, and the camping grounds rent pads by the night.

The draw is the altitude. Sanxia Zhidian rises to nearly 1,400 metres, the highest vantage on the Three Gorges, and the cable car from Shimiao lifts you to the Chijia viewing square in minutes, or you can walk the ridge trail if the weather holds. Reception at the guesthouses will book your cable-car slot and point you to the viewing platform for sunset, when the cliffs go gold and the river catches the last of the sun. Evenings are cold and clear — a hot meal of farm vegetables, then the long dark and the far-off horn of a barge working the channel you can no longer see.

The catch is the weather and the climb. Up here the air turns cold after dark even in summer, and the cloud sea only forms on clear, still mornings, so time your stay and ask the host which window to watch. Dining is limited to the guesthouse kitchens and a couple of village restaurants, with no night market and no pharmacy within easy reach, so bring what you need. The best rooms go first on weekends and holidays, when the summit draws the sunrise crowd, so reserve the gorge side and a high floor if you can.

For hikers, photographers, and anyone who has come to stand on top of the Yangtze rather than float through it, the Sanxia Zhidian stay is the quiet climax of a Fengjie trip. You are far from the town’s comforts, but you are also above the world, and the first light spilling over Qutang Gorge is worth every step of the climb.
