Tiān kēng dì fèng, shān lín de yī yè — At the sinkhole and crevice, a night in the karst hills.
The lodgings at the foot of Fengjie’s karst belt sit in and around Xinglong Town, the base camp for the sinkhole, the crevice, and the cave walks, and they trade the river’s drama for the cool green quiet of the limestone hills. From here the great Xiaozhai Tiankeng — a collapsed-cave pit hundreds of metres across — and the narrow Difeng earth-fissure lie a short drive into the hills, with the Dragon Bridge River threading a clear stream through a natural stone arch. These are resort hotels and farmstead inns rather than towers: clean tiled rooms, big windows onto the woods, and a dinner of farm-raised fish and mountain vegetables taken in the courtyard. A room typically runs 150 to 350 yuan, and the farmsteads throw in breakfast and a chance to watch the mist rise off the karst at first light.

The draw is the air. Up here the summer heat of the Yangtze terraces drops away and the hills stay cool, so the karst belt is the place to sleep if you plan a full day of walking the sinkhole rim and the crevice boardwalk. Reception can arrange a driver to the scenic gates in minutes, and several of the farmsteads keep a stack of trail leaflets and will pack you a lunch for the cave walks. Evenings are slow — a hot meal, then the sound of the stream and the long dark of the mountains, with none of the town’s late-night traffic.

The catch is distance. Xinglong is a couple of hours by road from the county seat and the gorges, so this is a stay for travellers committed to the karst, not a base for Baidi City. Dining is limited to what the inn or the small town offers, so do not expect a night market; the reward is the stillness and the morning, when the sinkhole fills with a soft glow and the birds wake the hills before the coaches arrive. If you base yourself at the Sanxia Tiankeng Country Park above town, the evening comes with its own show — the camping grounds light up after dark, and the night runs on barbecue, cold beer, and music around the bonfire. Book a room with a balcony if you can — the view of the limestone peaks at dawn is the whole point of coming up here.

For families, geology fans, and anyone who has come to walk the sinkhole rather than cruise the river, the Tiankeng-Difeng stay is the right kind of plain comfort. You are far from the pharmacies and the rail station, but you are also far from the crowds, and the cool clean air of the karst belt is its own reward after a long day on the trail.
