Mornings here start with the canal rather than traffic. Guests walk to the temple at opening time, cross Fengqiao before the groups arrive, and use the Shantang Street quarter for dinner – the whole western edge of old Suzhou becomes an evening loop instead of a taxi ride.

The workhorse tier is the chain hotels on the approach roads: clean twins, parking, and a straightforward bus into the centre – the practical base for a temple-first itinerary.

The character tier is the small courtyard guesthouses near the canal: white walls, a shared garden and rooms set back from the street – the slow option for the bell-and-bridge crowd.

The comfort tier is the fuller-service hotels with canal-view rooms and a restaurant: bigger beds, a proper breakfast and the bridge lit up from the upper floors – the splurge in a quiet district.
