Who it suits: first-timers who want to step from their room into the bazaar, night-market photographers, and young travellers who treat the 告庄 Gàozhuāng lantern sky as the destination; who it does not suit: anyone who needs silence after 11 p.m. or an elevator and a gym, because the towers here are low and the buzz is the point. The rectangle is walkable – the whole quarter crosses in twenty minutes – and its 大金塔 Dàjīntǎ Great Golden Pagoda and the 澜沧江 Láncāng Jiāng embankment are the two anchors the beds sit between.
