Hailing Island Seaside Minsu
You wake to a gull’s cry and the blinds are already glowing with a soft silver light; you pull them open and the whole of the 十里银滩 Shílǐ Yíntān - the Ten-Mile Silver Beach - lies flat and white under the early sun, the water a sheet of pale blue running to the edge of the world. At your minsu on 海陵岛 Hǎilíng Dǎo the host has left fresh soy milk at the door and a note about which tide is best for shells, and you realise you have nowhere you need to be.
Hailing Island sits off the coast of Yangjiang, voted one of China’s ten most beautiful islands by Chinese National Geography, its 141 kilometres of coastline wrapped around the “Southern Beidaihe” of Guangdong. Along the 闸坡 Zhápō town front and the long sweep of Shili Silver Beach a dense ribbon of seaside guesthouses has grown, from simple family rooms above the seafood market to smart apartment minsu with full kitchens and sunset balconies. The island’s draw is the sand itself - pure white quartz, free and uncrowded on the silver beach - and the slow rhythm of a fishing community that still brings the catch in at dusk.
The Rooms
The minsu here are mostly apartments and small guesthouses, and the good ones cluster on the Silver Beach front or the Dajiao Bay Dàjiǎowān strip near the 大角湾 Dàjiǎowān scenic area. Expect clean tiled rooms, a balcony, and increasingly a kitchen so you can buy crab and oysters at the Zhapo market and cook them yourself. Sea-view doubles run from a compact 30 m² to family suites with bunk beds; the higher-floor apartments on Silver Beach give you the full unbroken sunrise, and a few bring a private terrace with a small pool.
What Makes It Special
It is a working island, not a resort, and that is the charm. Walk the Silver Beach at dawn, ride an e-bike to 马尾岛 Mǎwěi Dǎo for the famous “orange-sea” sunset, or visit the 南海一号 Nánhǎi Yīhào Maritime Silk Road Museum, a ship-shaped building holding an 800-year-old Song dynasty wreck. The seafood is the other reason to come: garlic vermicelli scallops, peppery mantis shrimp, goose-and-egg rice, all cheaper and fresher than anywhere inland, best eaten at a street stall with the waves a hundred metres away.
Practicalities
Price. Around ¥200 to ¥600 per night for a sea-view room, and ¥500 to ¥1,000 for a beachfront apartment, lower in winter (when rooms can halve) and higher on summer weekends and holidays.

Getting there. No metro; take high-speed rail to Yangjiang Station then a taxi of about 30 minutes (or a ¥15-30 shuttle to Zhapo), or self-drive via the Shenhai Expressway (G15) over the Hailing Bridge, 3-4 hours from the Pearl River Delta. Rent an e-bike on the island for ¥40-80 a day.
