Haituo Valley Stays: Alpine Meadows, Olympic Downhill Slopes and Cool-Summer Lodges of Yanqing District, Beijing
海坨高处云生榻,一夏清凉不借风。Hǎituó gāochù yún shēng tà, yī xià qīngliáng bù jiè fēng – High on Haituo the clouds rise from the bed; a whole summer’s coolness borrowed from no wind.
The stay at 海坨山谷 Hǎituó Shāngǔ Haituo Valley is not a farmyard and not a county-town hotel – it is, plainly put, a purpose-built mountain resort valley: the terraced lodges, apartment blocks and meadow cabins of the valley floor in 张山营镇 Zhāngshānyíng Zhèn Zhangshanying township, at the northwestern corner of 延庆区 Yánqìng Qū Yanqing District, 北京 Běijīng Beijing, where the ground already stands at roughly a thousand metres and climbs toward 小海坨山 Xiǎo Hǎituó Shān Little Haituo at 2,241 metres, where the 国家高山滑雪中心 Guójiā Gāoshān Huáxuě Zhōngxīn National Alpine Ski Centre laid the 2022 Winter Olympic downhill courses on the mountain’s north face, and where the valley’s meadows, larches and small lake were landscaped around the lodges rather than the other way round. Three bands hold the beds: the valley-floor lodges with meadow views and full service; the apartment-style blocks sold by the night, with kitchens, built for families and long weekends; and the slope-side rooms up toward the ski base, closest to the lifts and the trail heads. Rooms run from 大床房 dàchuáng fáng doubles to two-bedroom 家庭房 jiātíng fáng suites; every bed has heating and most have underfloor warmth, because the valley runs a full season colder than the city.

Call it honestly: ¥600–1,500 a night in the October 2026 snapshot, which is resort money and should be judged as such. A standard lodge double runs ¥600–850 midweek, the apartment blocks ¥800–1,100 for a one-bedroom with a kitchen, and the slope-side suites ¥1,100–1,500; breakfast is sometimes included and sometimes ¥68 a head, and parking is free once you are inside the gate. The valley has two sharply different high seasons. July and August are the cool-air season, when the city sits at thirty-five degrees and the valley at twenty-four, and weekend rates go to 1.5–2x with a month’s lead time needed. December to February is the ski season, when the Olympic runs open and the same rooms fetch the same premium. The shoulder weeks – late September, the first half of March – are when the place is quiet, the larches gold or the snow still on the ridge, and the rates slide back toward ¥600 (worth confirming the details for your dates and whether the lifts are turning).

The honest star is the altitude, and it is not a marketing line. Fifteen hundred metres of climb between the valley and 延庆城区 Yánqìng chéngqū buys five to seven degrees, a sky with actual stars in it, and July evenings that need a jacket; add the larch colour in the first half of October and the downhill course visible from the meadow, and you have the one place in the district where the landscape itself is the product. What gets oversold is the word “resort” in its full sense: dining is limited to a handful of outlets at resort prices, the valley is a managed development rather than a village, and the “ski-in” claim depends entirely on snow-making and the lift schedule (worth confirming what is open before you book a winter week). Service thins in the shoulder weeks, when half the staff have gone and the pool may be shut. Judge it as altitude, quiet and a long view at a price, and it delivers; judge it as a village and you will spend the evening in a car park.
The self-aware postscript: a family I know has taken the same one-bedroom apartment in the valley every August for four years, and the ritual has not changed – arrive Friday at dusk, eat badly and expensively at the only open outlet, then sit on the terrace until eleven because the air is cool enough to want a blanket in the middle of summer, while the children find the same three other children on the meadow. Nobody has ever used the gym. Yanqing holds four other kinds of bed and they are not interchangeable: the town chains at 延庆城区 Yánqìng chéngqū for the errands and the river, the wall-foot courtyards at 岔道 Chàdào for the dawn climb, the farmyards under 龙庆峡 Lóngqìng Xiá for the gorge and the ice lanterns, and the 火炕 huǒkàng banquet yards at 柳沟 Liǔgōu for the tofu tables. The valley is the expensive door, and the only one that sells you the weather.

flowcloud would say that the valley stay is a bed bought for the altitude – meadow cabin to slope-side suite in the October 2026 snapshot, ¥600–1,500 and the widest spread in the district – and that the honest move is to pay for the height, ask what breakfast and the shuttle actually cover, and let the cool air do the work, because the thousand metres are the amenity and the resort pricing is the price – the ridge keeps the only summer. All checked October 2026.
Where to stay: Stay up in the valley itself rather than down in 张山营 Zhāngshānyíng village – the premium buys altitude, and a bed at 1,200 metres is the difference between a fan and an open window in July. Ask what the rate covers: breakfast, the shuttle to the 小海坨 Xiǎo Hǎituó trailheads and parking are sometimes separate line items. July and August weekends sell out a month ahead; June and September are the cheaper edges. All checked October 2026.
