The room stock spans the usual ladder: business chains over the malls, full-service hotels with club floors, and apartment-style rooms above the office blocks, priced a clear step below Nanjing or Suzhou for the same stars.
Proximity is the argument. From a lobby downtown, the evening canal corridor is minutes east, the banquet restaurants cluster around the old streets, and the railway stations sit north for morning departures. Hotels here compete on breakfast and front-desk polish – staff are used to guests fitting a memorial hall visit in before checkout.
The Stays
The workhorse tier is the business-chain floors above the commercial blocks: compact twins, strong showers, desks set up for train timetables – the function pick for a sightseeing sprint.
The character tier is the smaller renovated properties around the old-city lanes: warmer timber, quieter corridors, and the snack streets below the windows – the pick for travellers who would rather walk to dinner than ride.
The comfort tier is the full-service towers with club floors: gilded lobbies, city-view rooms, big breakfast halls and an evening lounge – the splurge that still costs less than the same room in Yangzhou or Nanjing.

Where to stay: Book the club-floor towers early for fairs at the exhibition centre, and ask for rooms off the main avenue if traffic noise matters – the old-city sights sit a short taxi east and the canal corridor a short ride south, so any downtown base works.
