The house has three guest rooms, a persimmon tree in the yard, and a grandmother who will not let you leave in the morning without soup. The rooms are plain — tile floor, timber bed, a kettle, an air conditioner that is really a heater in winter — and the bathroom is across the yard, which is worth knowing before you book in February. What you get instead is a view of the 九嶷山 Jiǔyí Shān ridgeline from the yard, eggs from the chickens you can hear, vegetables from the plot behind the house, and a family who will drive you to the mausoleum gate for twenty yuan and refuse to take it. Farmhouse rooms below the Jiuyi Mountains in 宁远县 Níngyuǎn Xiàn run ¥120–280 a night, usually with two meals thrown in.

宁远 Níngyuǎn is where the 舜帝陵 Shùndì Líng, the tomb of the legendary Emperor Shun, has been tended since at least the Tang and probably much longer, and the village economy around it has been hosting pilgrims for most of that time. The farmhouses that take guests are concentrated in the villages on the approach to the mausoleum — 九嶷山乡 Jiǔyíshān Xiāng and the settlements along the 潇水 Xiāoshuǐ tributaries below the peaks — and they are not a hotel industry so much as a few hundred families with a spare room and a licence.
The reason to stay here rather than in the county town, which has proper hotels at similar prices, is the hour before and after the crowds. The mausoleum is a pilgrimage site with a steady flow of tour buses from eight in the morning; at seven it is incense smoke and a few old women with brooms. And in the evening, when the buses have gone, the villages below the mountain do the thing that villages do — people sit outside, dinner is loud, and somebody will eventually try to give you rice wine.

What You Are Paying For
Price. ¥120–280 for a double, frequently including dinner and breakfast. The variance is mostly about whether the room has a private bathroom and heating; ¥120 almost certainly means neither.
Address. Villages around 九嶷山 Jiǔyí Shān, 宁远县 Níngyuǎn Xiàn, 永州市 Yǒngzhōushì. Bookings are made by phone through a Chinese platform, and many places have no listing at all — your best route is to ask at the mausoleum ticket office.
Rooms. Two to six. Ask for 带独立卫生间 dài dúlì wèishēngjiān, with a private bathroom, if that matters to you. Ask about 热水 rèshuǐ, hot water, and about whether it is a 太阳能 tàiyángnéng solar heater, which on a cloudy winter day means cold showers.
Getting there. 宁远站 Níngyuǎn Zhàn on the high-speed line is about 30 kilometres from the mausoleum; a taxi is ¥80–120. From 永州 Yǒngzhōu city it is roughly two hours by road.
What the Locals Know
Book the persimmon season. Late October to November the trees in every yard are heavy and the villages are at their best; the rooms fill with people who have come for the fruit and the colour.
Ask for 血鸭 xuèyā at dinner and pay for it. The farmhouses around Ningyuan cook the local version of blood duck better than the restaurants in town, and a home wok with home lard is a different dish. Expect ¥60–90 for a portion to share.
Walk down to the stream in the morning. The villages are laid out along cold spring channels that run constantly; the channels are used for washing vegetables, chilling beer and, in some houses, keeping fish alive.
Bring cash. There is no card machine and often no signal at the top of the valley.
Where to Stay
If you want a bathroom and a heater, the county town of 宁远 Níngyuǎn has proper hotels at ¥150–300 and the mausoleum is thirty minutes away by car. If you want the persimmon tree and the soup, take the farmhouse and accept the yard. Neither is the wrong answer; they are simply different trips.
flowcloud would say that a family who have been putting up pilgrims under the same roof for a few hundred years have got the hospitality arithmetic right — the room is cheap because the room is not the thing being sold, and the soup is free because the soup is the point.
