Beds Below the Ridge: Tekes Town and Yurt Camps at the Kalajun Gates in Ili, Xinjiang
八卦城中灯火静,草原毡房枕星眠 Bāguà chéng zhōng dēnghuǒ jìng, cǎoyuán zhānfáng zhěn xīng mián – In the eight-trigram town the lamplight is quiet; in the grassland yurts you sleep pillowed on stars.
喀拉峻片区住宿 Kālājùn piànqū zhùsù the Kalajun-area stays split between Tekes county town – the famous eight-trigram city whose streets radiate in a working mandala – and the yurt camps that line the valley below the grassland gates (worth confirming the details for which gate your ticket uses, since the eastern and western zones sit on different roads). Tekes itself is a real county town with real prices: hotels ring the central octagon, the night market feeds the whole valley, and every room in town is within ten minutes of the grassland shuttle. The yurt camps trade walls for stars – felt tents on wooden platforms, shared baths at the washhouse, and a 4 a.m. sky that makes the upgrade irrelevant.

Two nights pay differently. In town, you get the mandala from above – the viewing tower at the roundabout explains the plan better than any plaque – plus hot showers and the day market’s flatbread for the road. In the yurts, you get the herdsmen’s hours: mist on the horses, milk tea before sunrise, and a silence that the town never turns off. The stock answer in kind: book one night of each – town for arrival and laundry, yurt for the night sky – and let the grassland decide the rest.
Call it honestly: yurt-camp comfort is basic by design – shared facilities, early lights-out, and dogs that comment on the night (worth confirming the details for which camps run private baths, a minority luxury). What repays it is the position: no hotel room anywhere puts the sunrise on the grassland the way a yurt door does. Bring layers for the valley nights even in July, carry small notes for the homestay tea, and let the town’s guesthouses hold your luggage during the camp night.
The Stays
The hotels around Tekes’s central octagon keep practical rooms at county prices, with the night market and the grassland shuttle both inside a ten-minute walk.

The yurt camps below the eastern gate trade en-suite comfort for star fields and herdsmen’s hours, with milk tea at the stove before any alarm goes off.
The homestay houses in the valley villages offer family rooms and home cooking, favoured by riders who want a horse at the door and dinner by the stove.

The Stays

flowcloud would say the Tekes base is the prefecture’s map room: sleep in a mandala, wake on the ridge, and never once drive out of your way. All checked November 2026.
Where to stay: Split the stay: one night in a Tekes octagon-side hotel for showers and the night market, one in a valley yurt camp for the star field – and let the guesthouse hold the luggage on camp night. All checked November 2026.
