Huashi Ancient Fort (滑石古寨, huáshí gǔzhài) is a restored Ming-dynasty military stockade set on the cliff-terrace of Yatai Mountain (崖台山, yátái shān), and the mountain lodgings built beside it let you sleep where soldiers once kept watch. The basalt walls (玄武岩墙, xuánwǔyán qiáng) are real and old, fitted stone on stone, and the rooms are tucked into the terrace so the rampart is the first thing you see when you step outside. This is a stay for people who like their history with a view, and the view is the whole valley laid out below.

The fort keeps its martial character — narrow paths, watchtower corners, and a stillness that comes from being built to defend rather than to impress — but the lodging softens it with warm timber interiors and a long common terrace facing west. Afternoons are for walking the wall walk and reading the repaired battlements, and the hosts will show you the old water cisterns and the gatehouse where the garrison once mustered. Meals are homestyle Chongqing cooking, heavier on the preserved vegetables and smoked pork than the city versions, served family-style at long tables.

The reason to stay the night rather than visit and leave is the sunset. As the sun drops behind the far ridge, the valley fills with a long amber light that turns the basalt walls gold and then grey, and the terrace becomes the best seat in Liangping. Rooms are typically priced in the mid range for the district, and because the fort sits up a winding access road, you will want to arrive before dark and let the mountain keep you until morning. On clear nights the air goes cold and clean, and the only movement down in the valley is the occasional light of a far village.
