The stay of choice in Lijiang is inside the water – a 客栈 kèzhàn courtyard inn built out of a Naxi house in the free, wall-less streets of 大研古城 Dàyán Gǔchéng Dayan Old Town, with a yard, an 天井 tiānjǐng light well, and rooms arranged around it. The October 2026 snapshot runs three bands: budget courtyard rooms about 100-250 yuan, mid-range designed inns about 250-600, and upscale courtyard hotels about 600-1,500 – with one outlier far above them, 丽江大研安缦 Lìjiāng Dàyán Ānmàn Amandayan, an all-suite house of 35 rooms on 狮子山 Shīzǐ Shān Lion Hill above the roofs quoted from about 7,590 yuan – the old town is Yunnan’s most price-volatile lodging market, swinging with 春节 Chūnjié, 国庆 Guóqìng and the summer peak). Room stock is 大床 dàchuáng king and 双床 shuāngchuáng twin in converted compounds plus family suites; what you do not get is a standardised hotel room – the stock is small and individual, which is the charm and the risk. The honest shape is that you are buying a lane as much as a room, and at 2,400 m with no central heating, a Naxi courtyard room between November and March is a cold room: the 电暖器 diànnuǎn qì heater question comes before the booking, not after.
The lane is the decision. 五一街 Wǔyī Jiē and 七一街 Qīyī Jiē are the quiet residential lanes south-east of 四方街 Sìfāng Jiē – cobbled, watered, courtyard door to courtyard door, and the best address for sleep. 南门 Nánmén the south gate is the arrival face: flat, wide, luggage-friendly, and the one end with an elevator-equipped budget hotel, 金阁兰 Jīn’gélán (4.8, by 木府 Mùfǔ). 北门坡 Běiménpō the north slope ramp trades a climb for quiet and rooftop views – 丽江时光·小舍 Lìjiāng Shíguāng (4.8, more than 1,900 reviews) is the name there. 新华街 Xīnhuá Jiē is the bar strip and the one lane to avoid if you sleep early, and 狮子山 Shīzǐ Shān Lion Hill is the hill the 安缦 Ānmàn sits on, above the 万古楼 Wàngǔlóu view tower. The rectangle is small – the whole town crosses in fifteen minutes, and its 354 bridges mean the bed is never far from the 玉河 Yùhé water – which is the town’s real luxury: the cafe, the market and the bed are one walk apart.
Practical shape: book two nights minimum, because the town’s rhythm is the 7 a.m. water walk and the evening lane, and one night is all transfer. Cars cannot enter the cobbled core, so the plan is park at the 南门 Nánmén or 北门 Běimén lots and wheel in – pack light, or ask the inn for a porter. Check the three things old-town rooms get wrong: 24小时热水 èrshísì xiǎoshí rèshuǐ hot water, soundproofing (the 新华街 Xīnhuá Jiē bars are loud), and heating. The 50-yuan maintenance fee (valid 365 days) is collected at checkpoints across the ancient-city area, including 黑龙潭 Hēilóngtán. Arrive by rail at 丽江站 Lìjiāng Zhàn about 8 km out, 20-25 minutes by taxi, or by air at 三义机场 Sānyì Jīchǎng about 28 km, 40 minutes. The morning walk before the coaches – 四方街 Sìfāng Jiē waking with the locals’ 打跳 dǎtiào circle dance, the 忠义市场 Zhōngyì Shìchǎng market at first light – is the reason to sleep inside rather than beside the town. Budget (≈100–250 yuan): 丽江时光·小舍 Lìjiāng Shíguāng (北门坡 Běiménpō, 金虹路文庙巷117号, about 130 yuan, 4.8, more than 1,900 reviews, the north-slope rooftop address), 金阁兰酒店 Jīn’gélán (南门 Nánmén area, about 140 yuan, 4.8, an elevator near 木府 Mùfǔ – rare inside the cobbles), and 山禾雨·观景度假庭院 Shānhéyǔ (南门 Nánmén, 依古巷53号, about 227 yuan, 4.8, 316 reviews) hold the cheap band – rooms in converted 纳西民居 Nàxī Mínjū Naxi houses, 大床 dàchuáng and 双床 shuāngchuáng, small and individual. The honest floor is 云顶花园·云巷 Yúndǐng Huāyuán (大水车 Dàshuǐchē area, from about 121 yuan, 4.9). The two checks that matter are hot water and heat, because between November and March a courtyard room is a cold room.
Upscale (≈600–1,500+ yuan): 丽江大研安缦 Lìjiāng Dàyán Ānmàn Amandayan (狮山路29号 on 狮子山 Shīzǐ Shān, 35 all-suite rooms, from about 7,590 yuan) is the hill-top house with the roofs in the window; 丽江和府洲际度假酒店 Héfǔ Zhōujì InterContinental Lijiang (祥和路276号 by the 南门 Nánmén, 267 rooms) is the full-service option at the gate; and 赵公馆·珺上 Zhào Gōngguǎn (七一街八一下段31号, from about 687 yuan, 4.9, a Naxi banyan-courtyard house) is the designed courtyard end. The honest shape is that the upscale tier here buys the 狮子山 Shīzǐ Shān view and the yard, not the thread count.
Getting there: inside the cobbles, and the gate is the address – cars cannot enter the walking core, so the plan is park at the 南门 Nánmén or 北门 Běimén lots and wheel in over cobblestone, or take a taxi to the gate name (about 8 km, 20-25 minutes from 丽江站 Lìjiāng Zhàn; about 28 km, 40 minutes from 三义机场 Sānyì Jīchǎng). The streets are free and open around the clock, and the 50-yuan maintenance fee (valid 365 days) is collected at checkpoints across the ancient-city area, including 黑龙潭 Hēilóngtán. Give a driver 五一街 Wǔyī Jiē, 七一街 Qīyī Jiē, 南门 Nánmén or 北门坡 Běiménpō, and expect to walk the last 200 m.
