The stay in 罗平 Luópíng Luoping county – the far eastern corner of 曲靖 Qūjìng Qujing, out on the Yunnan-Guizhou border – is a seasonal one: this is the canola capital of 云南 Yúnnán Yunnan, where 油菜花 yóucáihuā canola (rape) flowers turn the 峰丛 fēngcóng karst peak clusters yellow from early February into late March, and the beds are 民宿 mínsù small guesthouses and 农家乐 nóngjiālè farm-stays scattered through the fields rather than hotels in a town core. Practical shape: the flower sea is a two-night stay minimum – one night is all transfer, and the dawn 峰丛 fēngcóng light is the reason you came. Book for February or early March and reserve far ahead; outside the 花期 huāqī the same beds drop to a third of the price or close entirely, which makes Luoping a quiet, cheap stop in, say, June. Check the three things farm-stay rooms get wrong: 24小时热水 èrshísì xiǎoshí rèshuǐ hot water, 隔音 géyīn soundproofing, and whether the bathroom is 独立 dúlì private. Arrive by rail at 罗平站 Luópíng Zhàn on the 南昆铁路 Nánkūn Tiělù Nanning-Kunming line (slow trains, worth confirming current services) or by bus from 曲靖 Qūjìng, about three hours (worth confirming the details), and 昆明 Kūnmíng about four; the peak-cluster inns are a short taxi from either. Bring layers: at 1,400-1,800 m the mornings are cold even in flower season, and the fields are at their best 7:00-9:00. worth confirming the band prices in the week you book, because the flower season is the most price-volatile fortnight in 曲靖 Qūjìng. The designed end is 罗平花海·峰丛景观民宿 Fēngcóng (about 450 yuan, 4.7, flower-view rooms with floor heating and family rooms, worth confirming) – the honest shape is that 350-700 yuan buys the field in the window, not thread count – while 罗平县城商务酒店 (about 300 yuan, 4.6, chain quality near the station) is the comfortable base.
