Menglian Dai Inns: Sleep in a Stilt House in the Last Dai Old Town

傣楼一夜,边城千年。Dǎilóu yī yè, biānchéng qiān niān – One night in a Dai stilt house; a thousand years on the border.

The stay in 孟连 Mènglián Menglian – 孟连傣族拉祜族佤族自治县 Mènglián Dǎizú Lāhùzú Wǎzú Zìzhìxiàn, the south-west corner county of 普洱 Pǔ’ěr on the Myanmar border – is the 傣楼客栈 dǎilóu kèzhàn Dai stilt-house inn, and the address is 娜允古镇 Nàyǔn Gǔzhèn Nazhong Old Town: a 700-year 傣族 Dǎizú town of 干栏式 gānlánshì wooden houses on stone lanes, the seat of 28 generations of 刀氏 Dāo shì 土司 tǔsī tusi chieftains whose 孟连宣抚司署 Mènglián Xuānfǔ Sīshǔ yamen still stands in its 傣汉合璧 Dǎi-Hàn hébì Dai-Chinese mix of 斗栱 dǒugǒng brackets and 飞檐 fēiyán eaves. The lodging is not a hotel quarter but a lane: century-old wooden houses rebuilt into small inns between the 宣抚司署 Xuānfǔ Sīshǔ, the 上城佛寺 Shàngchéng Fósì upper-town temple and the 南垒河 Nánlěi Hé Nanlei river, plus chain-standard hotels on 帕当路 Pàdāng Lù and 滨河东路 Bīnhé Dōng Lù out toward the bus station. 孟连 Mènglián is a working border town – the avocado capital, a 咖啡 kāfēi coffee street, a 大金塔 dàjīntǎ golden pagoda – and the honest shape of the sleep is small, wooden and quiet: there is no bar strip, and the shutters close at nine.

The October 2026 snapshot runs three bands: budget converted-house rooms about 100-160 yuan, mid-range designed Dai-style guesthouses about 160-320, and upscale restored-compound houses about 320-600 yuan (worth confirming – a thin market where 泼水节 Pōshuǐ Jié Water-Splashing Festival in mid-April and 神鱼节 Shényú Jié are the only real peaks). The cheap end is a plain room in an old 傣楼 dǎilóu – clean, simple, thin walls, sometimes a shared bathroom and always stairs; the middle band buys a modern bathroom, a 茶室 cháshì tea room and a courtyard; the top band buys the restored 天井 tiānjǐng courtyard house itself. What every band buys is the old-town evening – the lanes after the day trippers leave, the temple bell, the river path at sunset. Who it suits: slow travellers, border-town readers and 傣味 Dǎiwèi Dai-food travellers who will chase 牛撒撇 niúsǎpiě, 舂干巴 chōng gānbā and 彩色米干 cǎisè mǐgàn through the market; who it does not suit: anyone who needs a lift, a gym or dinner after 9 p.m., because the lanes are stone and the kitchens close early.

Practical shape: 孟连 Mènglián is a two-night stay, not a transfer – pair it with the 宣抚司署 Xuānfǔ Sīshǔ in the morning light, the 上城佛寺 Shàngchéng Fósì at sunset and the market breakfast. The honest season is November to April, dry and 18-25°C; the rains of July to September turn the lanes green and slippery, and the 泼水节 Pōshuǐ Jié and 神鱼节 Shényú Jié weeks in April are the liveliest and tightest. Getting here: buses from 普洱市区 Pǔ’ěr Shìqū Simao run about three hours (worth confirming the current timetable), 澜沧景迈机场 Láncāng Jǐngmài Jīchǎng is about 26 km and half an hour away, and 景洪 Jǐnghóng is about four hours – all roads are mountain roads, so budget the driving. Check the three things wooden-house rooms get wrong: 24小时热水 èrshísì xiǎoshí rèshuǐ hot water at peak hours, 隔音 géyīn soundproofing, and whether the bathroom is 独立 dúlì private. Bring your ID card – this is a 边境 biānjìng border county and hotels check it – plus flat shoes for the wet stone lanes, repellent, and a jacket for the border nights. The old town itself is free; the 宣抚司署 Xuānfǔ Sīshǔ ticket is about 30 yuan (worth confirming the details). worth confirming band prices in the week you book. All checked October 2026.

The Stays

  • 古镇傣楼老院客栈 gǔzhèn dǎilóu lǎoyuàn kèzhàn old Dai-courtyard inns in the lanes: about 100-200 yuan (worth confirming the details), king and twin rooms rebuilt inside century-old wooden houses, stairs only, thin walls, the old town at the door. Who it suits: travellers who will walk the lanes at 7 a.m. and again at dusk; who it does not suit: anyone who needs a lift, a quiet night or a modern bathroom – the honest trade is the house against the hardware.
  • 娜允设计民宿 Nàyǔn shèjì mínsù designed Dai-style guesthouses: about 200-350 yuan (worth confirming the details), renovated 傣楼 dǎilóu with private bathrooms, 茶室 cháshì tea rooms and courtyards, still inside the old town’s stones. Who it suits: couples and design-conscious solo travellers who want the atmosphere with a working shower; who it does not suit: purists who want an unpolished farmhouse – these are styled, and they show it.
  • 县城新区商务酒店 xiànchéng xīnqū shāngwù jiǔdiàn county new-town business hotels near the bus station: about 150-250 yuan (worth confirming the details), chain-standard rooms with parking, hot water and breakfast, five to ten minutes from the old town by taxi. Who it suits: early buses, self-drivers and anyone who wants a modern bed after the mountain roads; who it does not suit: travellers who came for the 傣楼 dǎilóu evening – the new town is a grid, not a lane.

flowcloud would say that the Menglian stay is a wooden house with beds in it – 100 yuan lane room to 600 for the restored 天井 tiānjǐng courtyard in the October 2026 snapshot – and that the honest move is to sleep inside 娜允古镇 Nàyǔn Gǔzhèn and walk the stone lanes at dusk, because the old town is the amenity and the new town is the bus. All checked October 2026.

Where to stay: the lanes of the 娜允古城 Nàyǔn Gǔchéng for the old Dai-courtyard 客栈 kèzhàn, the old town for the designed 傣楼 dǎilóu guesthouses, and the county new town by the bus station for chain-standard rooms (worth confirming the details); the old town is walked, not driven. All checked October 2026.
