The Homestay Capital of China: Moganshan Stays

莫干山住宿 Mògān Shān Zhùsù the stays of 莫干山 Mògān Shān Mogan Mountain are a national phenomenon: what began with the republic-era villas became China’s boutique-homestay capital, and the mountain now runs the whole ladder – the centenarian stone villas on the ridge itself, the design-homestay clusters in the bamboo folds below, and the pool-side lodges of 庾村 Yǔcūn Yukun and the 劳岭 Láolǐng valley at the mountain foot. Shanghai books the weekends; the mountain keeps the mood.

The ridge villas are the history wing: original 1900s-1930s houses – thick stone walls, deep verandas, fireplaces – run as guesthouses where the floorboards creak with provenance and the morning mist arrives at the window. The bamboo-fold homestays are the design wing: concrete-and-glass pavilions, rooftop pools over the green waves, chefs in open kitchens – architecture answering the old villas a century later.

A mountain stay is an itinerary in itself: late breakfasts on a bamboo deck, the Sword Pool gorge and villa circuit midday, tea at the Yukun market, and the evening ritual – lamps down the folds, the valley cooling, dinner built from the mountain’s own shoots and chickens. Summer is the high season the founders intended; winter gives fireplaces and the lowest rates.
