Sleeping on Chongqing’s Old Treaty-Port Waterfront
Chongqing is a municipality of southwest China, and 南岸区 Nán’àn Qū, Nan’an District, holds the city’s south bank, the Yangtze-side strip that faces the peninsula of 渝中 Yúzhōng, Yuzhong, across the water. Its lodging story is anchored on one road: 南滨路 Nánbīn Lù, Nanbin Road, the riverfront drive where the district’s hotels stand in a line with their windows on the current. The road’s foundations are older than any building on it: in 1891 Chongqing opened as a treaty port and set up its customs here, and the wharf at 龙门浩 Lóngménhào, Longmenhao, became the first inland river port of western China opened to foreign trade. To sleep on Nanbin Road is to sleep on top of the first chapter of the city’s modern history, with the lit face of the old city across the water for company.

What the 1891 opening left behind is the road’s real furniture. Consulates, customs offices and trading houses gathered on this bank through the decades that followed – among them the houses remembered as 隆茂 Lóngmào, Longmao, Butterfield & Swire’s 太古 Tàigǔ agency and the Anderson warehouse of 安达森 Āndásēn – and the French Navy put up a barracks in 1902-03 that still stands. The record also credits the shipmaster Archibald John Little with opening the upper-Yangtze steamer line in 1898, and the foreign firms multiplied. By one official-media count, more than 80 per cent of Chongqing’s surviving treaty-port buildings line this stretch of bank. The buildings are why a room here has a subject: the window is a postcard, but the wall downstairs is an archive.
The road itself is the newest layer. Media histories of the district date the modern Nanbin Road to the flood-defence embankment works begun after the 1998 flood, followed by two decades of expansion into a riverside economic belt that now runs some 25 kilometres along the bank. The hotels arrived in the boom that followed, so the strip reads as one continuous frontage: river-facing towers, promenade restaurants and the restored treaty-port buildings folded between them. The booking logic follows the geography – pick a stretch of the road, then pick a price.

In an October 2026 platform snapshot the ladder ran: smart-mid river-view chains from about 596 yuan at the Atour in the Crown International building at 69 Nanbin Road and about 690 at the Le Méridien in the Wanda plaza on Jiangnan Avenue; a mid band with the Radisson at 22 Nanbin Road; and a full-service tier from about 969 at the Marriott on 9 Yanyu Road, beside the Haitangxi metro station, and about 990 at the Sheraton at 78 Nanbin Road, the twin gold towers on the strip’s skyline, up to about 1,393 at the Kempinski on 2 Jiangnan Avenue, a short walk inland on the Nanping side. Every figure is a snapshot that floats.
Three boundaries keep this piece in its lane. Against the north bank’s tower-lobby register: that round belongs to the district across the Jialing, and this piece does not re-enter it – the subject here is the south bank’s own waterfront history. Against the heritage conversion upriver at Longmenhao, a consulate-era compound that is now a hotel: that rarer register has its own article on this site. And against the confluence end around Danzishi, covered separately on this site: Nanbin Road proper is the long middle stretch, and its story is the 1891 opening.
Practicalities
Price. In an October 2026 platform snapshot the road ran from about 596 to about 1,393 yuan a night: smart-mid river-view chains from about 596 to 690, mid-band rooms between them, full-service international rooms from about 969 to 1,393. Holiday weeks and river-view floors lift every band. Book through Ctrip, Tongcheng or Trip.com; the international brands are also on their own channels. Prices fluctuate seasonally; check current rates, and treat every figure as a snapshot that floats.
Address. 重庆市南岸区南滨路 Zhōngqìng Shì Nán’àn Qū Nánbīn Lù, Nanbin Road, Nan’an District, Chongqing – the hotel line runs along the riverfront itself, with the Atour at number 69, the Radisson at 22 and the Sheraton at 78, the Marriott at 9 Yanyu Road just off it, and the Le Méridien and Kempinski on 江南大道 Jiāngnán Dàdào, Jiangnan Avenue, one block inland on the Nanping side.
Rooms. The market sells the facing before anything else: river-facing rooms with the old city across the water, side-facing rooms with the bridge angles, and rear-facing rooms priced like the mid band. Confirm facing and floor on the order page; category words, not platform-awarded stars, are the honest descriptors. Exact room counts are not confirmed in government or operator sources, so any precise figure is the platform’s own.
Getting there. Metro 海棠溪 Hǎitángxī, Haitangxi, on the Loop line, sits directly beside the Marriott address, and buses run the length of Nanbin Road; the Yangtze River Cableway crosses to the Yuzhong side from 上新街 Shàngxīnjiē, Shangxinjie, up the bank. From 江北国际机场 Jiāngběi Guójì Jīchǎng, Jiangbei International Airport, the taxi ride is about 40 minutes in normal traffic. Each hotel runs its own car park – confirm free or paid terms per property, as policies vary.

A day here keeps its own rhythm. The promenade takes the morning run while the tour boats are still tied up; midday belongs to the restored treaty-port buildings, an open-air archive at walking pace; the cableway and the bridges hand you to the old city and back; and the evening returns everything to the window as the far bank lights up in layers. The evening walk is downstairs: the barracks walls, warehouse fronts and customs stones of the 1890s are lit like exhibits.
flowcloud would say that Nanbin Road is the only hotel strip in China where the concierge map is a history syllabus, and that the correct way to sleep here is in the river-facing room at whatever the calendar allows, because you are not paying for a view of the old city, you are paying to be looked at by it from the bank where it first opened its doors.
Where to stay: a smart-mid river-view chain room from about 596 yuan if the window and the price are both the point, a full-service international room from about 969 to 1,393 if the lobby and the service floor matter, and a mid-band room near the Haitangxi station end if the metro does the measuring – because on 南滨路 Nánbīn Lù, Nanbin Road, every bed is priced by the same two things: the water in front, and the year 1891 underneath.
