Nanli Lake, Where Ding’an Sleeps by the Water
南丽湖 Nánlì Hú is the water at the centre of 定安县 Dìng’ān Xiàn, the county directly under the Hainan provincial government that has no coastline at all, and the lake lies in 雷鸣镇 Léimíng Zhèn with 黄竹镇 Huángzhú Zhèn on its far shore. It is the largest freshwater lake in northern Hainan, holds 12.3 square kilometres of open water, and carries two promotional names: 中国淡水皇后, the freshwater empress of China, and a sister-lake pairing with 日月潭 in Taiwan, which is a tourism line and not a designation. It sits 20 kilometres from the county town, half an hour by car, and it is the 一湖 of 一城两山一湖一泉, the lake among the five resources the county has built its tourism plan around.
The flagship bed opened in 2021 and has 259 rooms. 海南诺德丽湖酒店 Hǎinán Nuòdé Lìhú Jiǔdiàn, published in English as Noble Lake Hotel Hainan, stands inside 中铁诺德丽湖半岛 Zhōngtiě Nuòdé Lìhú Bàndǎo, the villa peninsula in the scenic area, and is built in a south-east Asian style beside the national wetland park. It sells four room types, all facing the water, from a garden room to a suite. The rest is unapologetically resort: a 675-square-metre banquet hall, two restaurants, a lobby bar, a gym, a KTV, a children’s playground, tennis courts, fishing, an artificial beach, a cold-spring fish therapy pool and an outdoor pool under a canopy.
The price is modest by resort standards and the guest score is the honest part. Booking pages checked on 29 September 2026 list the hotel from about 334 yuan a night, deposit about 1,000 yuan and no pets, and the same pages carry a 5.0-star label that no official star register backs: it is a platform description, not a grading. Across 164 to 173 reviews on one platform the hotel sits at about 3.8 to 3.9 on that platform’s scale, below the four-point band most coastal Hainan hotels clear, while the praise goes to the view and the facilities rather than the room.
Half a kilometre along the shore the trade changes character entirely. 星悦湾 DREAMWORLD 民宿 Xīngyuè Wān at the peninsula end sells villas rather than rooms and names them after local places and local fruit, 菠萝蜜, 荔枝, 槟榔, 黄竹, 龙门 and 雷鸣, with tags for private pools, lake views, terraces and pets; it was listed from about 216 yuan a night on one site on 29 September 2026 and 318 on another, rated 4.7. 夏末原舍度假别墅 is a converted owner’s villa in the same compound, from about 869 yuan. And 星空野营 Xīngkōng Yěyíng, the coconut-tent camp behind the 珺唐 Jùntáng hotel, has fifteen units built one at a time by its owner in a bamboo grove: tents, a caravan and a wooden cabin, two tents to a suite, most with air conditioning and shared showers.
What the Rooms Are Like
A room on 南丽湖 is a resort room, and the decision is mostly which of the lake’s two styles you want. The big hotel gives you an air-conditioned block with a lift, a kettle, a minibar and a window on the water if you paid for the lake side; the villas and the camp give you a whole house or a canvas shell with a wooden floor, a pool that may or may not be private, and, at the camp, a two-day telephone booking rule. Both are reached by car and neither is walkable to a shop. Mosquitoes are the constant, the county’s advice is to carry repellent, and the beach and the water sports are all outdoors.
Practicalities
Price. On 29 September 2026 the lake split cleanly into two markets. The 259-room hotel was listed from about 334 yuan a night, the lakeside villas from about 216 to 869, and the camp at 299 yuan for a double coconut tent or 39 yuan if you bring your own. A guide estimate from the same season puts lake guesthouses at 220 to 400 and the resort rooms at 350 to 650, and the villas and the camp both empty first over National Day, the Spring Festival and summer weekends. Every figure is a snapshot that floats.
Address. The rooms are in 雷鸣镇 Léimíng Zhèn and on the 黄竹镇 Huángzhú Zhèn side of 南丽湖 Nánlì Hú in 定安县 Dìng’ān Xiàn, about 20 kilometres from 定城镇 Dìngchéng Zhèn, the county town, and 50 to 60 kilometres from 海口 Hǎikǒu. The hotel is on the 中铁诺德丽湖半岛 peninsula, the villas and the camp are in the same compound or within nine kilometres of the scenic area gate, and the lake’s own attractions, the boardwalk, 醉花岛 and the 顽酷南丽湖欢乐湾 water park, are a short drive apart.
Rooms. Ask which side of the building you are on, because the lake view is the product and the phrase is used loosely. Ask whether the pool is private or shared, since the villa names promise both. Ask about the booking rule at the camp, which is two days ahead by telephone and open unless a typhoon is coming. And ask what the property does when the lake closes to boats, because from May to October the typhoon season can stop the water sports while the room stays booked; the comfortable months are November to April.
Getting there. 定安县 Dìng’ān Xiàn has no railway passenger station, and the island’s east-coast high-speed line does not cross it, so the sensible arrival is 海口东站 Hǎikǒu Dōng Zhàn or 海口美兰国际机场 Hǎikǒu Měilán Guójì Jīchǎng and then a bus or a car for about 40 minutes. There is a direct coach from 定安汽车站 Dìng’ān Qìchēzhàn to the airport, opened before the 2022 Spring Festival travel rush, running 9:10 to 16:30 with eight departures a day, and the run to 海口东站 covers 48 kilometres from 05:50 to 20:30. By car it is 40 to 50 kilometres from 海口.
Where to stay: a lake-facing room at 海南诺德丽湖酒店 Hǎinán Nuòdé Lìhú Jiǔdiàn on the 诺德丽湖半岛 peninsula if you want the pool and the banquet hall, a villa at 星悦湾 DREAMWORLD or 夏末原舍度假别墅 if you are travelling as a group with a dog, and a coconut tent at 星空野营 if the night sky is the point, all of them on 南丽湖 Nánlì Hú in 雷鸣镇 Léimíng Zhèn and 黄竹镇 Huángzhú Zhèn, 定安县 Dìng’ān Xiàn. Book the lake for November to April, when the water is calm and the boats run.
flowcloud would say that a county with no beach has quietly built its holiday trade on a man-made lake that supplies the capital’s drinking water and its wedding photographs at once, and that the correct way to sleep here is to take the cheap villa rather than the branded room, because the water is the same water and the view does not check your receipt.
