Chongqing is a municipality of southwest China, and 南岸区 Nán’àn Qū, Nan’an District, holds the city’s south bank, including the green ridge of 南山 Nánshān, Nanshan, that lifts the district away from the river. Fifteen slow minutes by road above 黄桷垭 Huángjuéyà, Huangjueya, the rooms change register entirely: courtyards behind the old street, tea tables on terraces, the city glinting far below through the morning haze. The selling point is not wilderness – it is proximity. The hill is the district’s back step, and what distinguishes a stay here is what sits at the foot of the lane: a 600-metre old street, a centuries-old stone trail, and a slope of spring-chicken kitchens. The bed is chosen for the slow morning, and the old street is why the morning is slow.

The anchor is 黄桷垭老街 Huángjuéyà Lǎojiē, Huangjueya Old Street, an old street on the ancient 黄葛古道 Huánggē Gǔdào, Huangge Ancient Trail, the centuries-old stone footpath that tied the ridge to the river districts below. The lane runs about 600 metres and holds some 175 buildings in the old Ba-Yu vernacular, restored as a walking street of teahouses, small kitchens and craft shops, and the writer 三毛 Sānmáo, Sanmao, known in English as Echo Chan, lived on this street as a child, and the house is part of the walk. The trail itself still works: it drops from the old street toward the temple slope and the districts below, making a guesthouse here a hiking base as much as a bedroom.
The guesthouse market above the street runs in three registers. The top end is the designer courtyard: full compounds rebuilt in Chinese aesthetic vocabulary – lattice screens, courtyards, tea rooms – renting whole-house atmosphere by the room. The middle is the small independent house of three to eight rooms, run by resident hosts, where breakfast is a conversation. The bottom is the old-street inn, plain rooms above the lane at prices that read country rather than city. What they share is the formula visible from every terrace: a courtyard or a view deck, a tea table, and the city spread out below like a second, distant sea.

In an October 2026 platform snapshot the bands ran about as follows. Economy inns on and around the old street quoted from about 167 to 445 yuan a night. The small independents and mid-band houses ran roughly 588 to 1,301, with the 黄葛秘境1939 Huánggē Mìjìng 1939 house on the same street – outdoor pool, tea room – from about 1,301. The top of the market is the 美兮载和 Měixī Zàihé design-guesthouse courtyard compound on Huangjueya Zhengjie, from about 3,018 yuan. The small house called 重拾山 Chóngshíshān on the Wenfeng section of the back street keeps just five rooms, and the 非晚 Fēiwǎn house near 涂山寺 Túshān Sì, Tushan Temple, opened in 2019 with Chinese-style rooms and vegetarian mini-hotpot suppers. Every figure is a snapshot that floats.
Three boundaries keep this piece honest. Against the forest-ridge register on the city’s other side, from an earlier round: that market sells the woods itself, and this piece does not – the words to book by here are courtyard and trail, not retreat. Against the temple-slope beds one climb further up, where the Taoist grounds and the botanical garden set a quieter clock: those have their own article on this site. And against the riverfront hotels below: the two markets share a district and nothing else, and the difference is measured in decibels and steps.
Practicalities
Price. In an October 2026 platform snapshot the hill ran from about 167 to about 3,018 yuan a night: economy inns 167 to 445, small independents and mid-band houses 588 to 1,301, designer courtyard compounds from about 3,018. Weekends and the spring-chicken festival season lift the middle bands hardest, and the top courtyards book out around holidays – reserve ahead through Ctrip, Tongcheng or Meituan. Prices fluctuate seasonally; check current rates, and treat every figure as a snapshot that floats.
Address. 重庆市南岸区黄桷垭 Zhōngqìng Shì Nán’àn Qū Huángjuéyà, Huangjueya, Nan’an District, Chongqing – the cluster gathers around 黄桷垭老街 Huángjuéyà Lǎojiē, Huangjueya Old Street, 黄桷垭正街 Huángjuéyà Zhèngjiē, Huangjueya Zhengjie, and the back-street 文峰段 Wénfēng Duàn, Wenfeng section, with houses scattered along the lanes toward the temple slope.
Rooms. The stock is courtyard compounds with Chinese-aesthetic rooms, small independent houses of three to eight keys, and plain old-street inns; a few add outdoor pools or tea rooms. Book by house size and host, not by any platform-awarded star. Exact room counts are not confirmed in government or operator sources, so any precise figure is the platform’s own.
Getting there. The practical approach is by car or taxi: Metro Line 6 to 海棠溪 Hǎitángxī, Haitangxi, or 上新街 Shàngxīnjiē, Shangxinjie, then a taxi up the mountain road of roughly 10 to 15 minutes. Most houses advertise free parking on their platform pages, but the lanes are narrow, so call the host for the last stretch. Huangjueya Old Street is walkable between several of the houses, and the Huangge trail head is at the street’s edge.

A slow day writes itself. Take the trail down after breakfast, at the pace the stone steps were cut for; land at noon on the spring-chicken slope, where the hillside kitchens have served their mountain-water chicken for decades; walk the old street in the afternoon light, Sanmao’s childhood lane included; and end at the 一棵树 Yīkēshù, Yikeshu, viewpoint, where the peninsula’s lights come up across the water in the famous stack. Then climb back to the courtyard, where the tea table is still out and the city is a sound rather than a sight.
flowcloud would say that Nanshan is the only mountain in Chongqing whose main attraction is the direction you walk when you leave it, and that the correct way to sleep up here is in a courtyard room above the old street at the price of a decent dinner downtown, because the luxury on this hill is not the thread count, it is the fifteen minutes.
Where to stay: a designer courtyard room from about 3,018 yuan if the compound itself is the destination, a small independent house from about 588 to 1,301 if the host and the trail are the point, and an old-street inn from about 167 to 445 if the budget funds a longer stay – because at 黄桷垭 Huángjuéyà, Huangjueya, you are not booking a room on a mountain, you are booking a slow morning with a centuries-old street at the foot of the stairs.
