A Riverside Hotel on the Beijiang in Qingyuan

清远市 Qīngyuǎn shì sits on the 北江 Běi jiāng, the North River, which comes down out of the hills of the north and runs green and wide past the city, and the riverfront is the oldest and pleasantest part of the town. A riverside hotel here is a mid-sized building on the bank, with its front rooms looking straight across the water at the far hills and the sandbars, and the riverside road and the evening promenade a few steps below the windows. It is the stay for someone who wants the town rather than the countryside, with a wide view and a short walk to the food.

The river is the life of the place and the reason to book it. In the morning there is mist on the water and the small boats work the shallows below the town; through the day the river is a long grey-green highway with the far bank green and the hills behind it; in the evening the promenade along the bank fills with families walking, the lights come on over the water, and the restaurants on stilts serve the 河鲜 that came off the boats that day. From a river-facing room you watch all of it work, which is more of a view than a city hotel usually offers.

The building itself is a comfortable, conventional four- or five-storey hotel with a lobby, a restaurant and a run of rooms. The rooms are spacious, with a firm bed, air conditioning, a clean bathroom and a wide window or a balcony on the river side; the back rooms face the town and cost less and are quieter in the evening but lose the point. There is usually a Chinese restaurant and a breakfast room, a lift, and reliable Wi-Fi, and the standard is good without being grand.

What the position gives you is a city you can walk. The 北江 riverfront is a promenade in itself, with the bridges and the boat quays spaced along it, and inland the streets of the older town have the markets and the 河鲜 restaurants and the 清远鸡 farmhouse kitchens. The city is the gateway to the whole county – the gorges upriver, the karst to the north-east, the hot springs that already have their own hotel – and a riverside base puts you on the road out as easily as it puts you on the promenade in. Come for two nights and eat river fish both evenings.

What the Rooms Are Like

Expect a room of twenty-five to thirty-five square metres, a firm bed, air conditioning, a clean en-suite bathroom with a shower, and usually a balcony or a large window. The river-facing rooms are the ones to book and cost more; the town-facing rooms are cheaper and quieter. There is a restaurant, a lift and reliable Wi-Fi. Ask for a higher floor for the best view, and confirm the room really faces the water rather than the street behind it.

Practicalities

Price. A double at a 北江 riverside hotel runs ¥250 to ¥500 a night in the shoulder season, and more over the October week and Chinese New Year. The river-facing rooms cost a premium, and the top floor with a balcony is the best of them.

Address. The hotel is on the riverfront of 清远市, in the 清城区 Qīngchéng qū of the city, facing the 北江 and within a short walk of the promenade and the restaurant streets. 清远市 is reached by the high-speed rail to 清远站 Qīngyuǎn zhàn.

Rooms. Ask for a room facing the river rather than the road, and for a higher floor. Confirm whether breakfast is included and whether the hotel has parking, which matters if you are driving on to the gorges or the karst. Check that the balcony is really on the water side, because some rooms have a partial view.

Getting there. From 清远站 Qīngyuǎn zhàn on the high-speed line, a taxi to the riverfront takes about twenty minutes. The city centre and the restaurant streets are walkable from the hotel, so a car is only needed for the day trips out of town.

Where to stay: the riverside hotels on the bank of the 北江 in 清城区, 清远市, reached by taxi from 清远站. Book a river-facing room on a high floor, eat the river fish in the evening, and use the city as the base for the gorges and the karst.

flowcloud would say that a hotel whose whole worth is a window over a working river, with the boats and the promenade and the evening lights laid out below, is a reminder that the best urban view is often the oldest thing the city has, and that water still organises a town.
