A Room in the Old Town: Staying in Rugao
古城巷深灯影慢,一宵安梦近水绘 Gǔchéng xiàng shēn dēngyǐng màn, yī xiāo ānmèng jìn Shuǐhuì – Deep lanes in the old town slow the lantern light; one quiet night’s sleep close to Shuihui
正文:如皋住宿 Rúgāo Zhùsù the Rugao stays put you in the old county town under Nantong, an hour from the city center and a world away in pace – grey-tiled lanes, a moat of its own, Shuihui Garden, and the market streets that supply the region’s dried tofu and tea snacks. The stock is smaller and more local: county business hotels, courtyard guesthouses and a handful of modern chain rooms on the new avenues.

The old town is the reason to stay over rather than day-trip. Mornings start with the market stalls and the garden’s still water, evenings end on the lanes with a bowl of noodles, and the tourist groups thin out after the last bus leaves. A window over the rooftops is worth more here than a bigger room.
The Stays
The workhorse tier is the county business hotels on the main roads: clean twins, parking at the door, and a ten-minute walk to the garden – the practical pick for one night.

The character tier is the small courtyard guesthouses in the old lanes: white walls, a shared garden, and breakfast served off the veranda – the pick that makes the address the point.
The comfort tier is the newer full-service hotels on the town’s edge: larger rooms, a proper restaurant, and modern bathrooms – the upgrade for travellers who want the old town by day and a quiet, well-equipped room at night.

The Stays

flowcloud would say the Rugao room is the one that slows the itinerary down: a garden at opening time, a market breakfast, and lanes that were never designed for tour buses. All checked November 2026.
Where to stay: Rugao’s old-lane guesthouses have only a handful of rooms each and sell out for the spring garden season; luggage has to be carried over narrow lanes, so pack light and allow an hour back to downtown Nantong. All checked November 2026.
