Chongqing is a municipality of southwest China, and 沙坪坝区 Shāpíngbà Qū Shapingba is its north-west district, whose commercial heart keeps the strangest hotel address in the city: rooms stacked directly above a working high-speed railway. 沙坪坝站 Shāpíngbà Zhàn, Shapingba station, opened in its present form on 25 January 2018 as the Chongqing terminus of the 成渝高铁 Chengdu-Chongqing high-speed line, and the trains arrive not at the edge of the district but beneath it, into platforms sunk under the shopping streets of 三峡广场 Sānxiá Guǎngchǎng, Sanxia Square, the district’s own phrase being 高铁穿楼, the train through the building. A guest steps off the train into an underground interchange, rides an escalator up through a mall, and is at the hotel desk within minutes – this is where Chongqing sleeps when the timetable is the concierge.

The station’s headline is official: official media at the 2018 opening reported it as the country’s first railway station built with a commercial complex covering a working high-speed rail yard, with about 49,000 square metres of added floor decked over the platforms and a station hall of about 13,000 beneath, and Chengdu trains in under an hour. A station has stood on the site since 1979, renamed along the way by a single account; the 2018 rebuild made the address singular. Beneath the deck, the hub stacks high-speed rail, metro, buses and taxis in one interchange, with extensive underground parking whose count the sources decline to agree on, so none is printed here.
The deck filled in 2021, when the mall of 金沙天街 Jīnshā Tiānjiē opened over the platforms, the district government’s date, completing the premise: a shopping district with a high-speed railway for a basement. Around it, Sanxia Square runs the retail and campus streets that have anchored Shapingba for decades, its promenades carrying the gorge sculptures it is named for, its back lanes holding the noodle counters the district eats in. For a one-night guest the geography is a gift: dinner, a bookstore hour and the hotel all within a walk of the escalators, and the train leaves from underneath.

In an October 2026 snapshot the beds around the hub ran in three bands. A bunk at the young-traveller end – 沐光 Mùguāng on 渝碚路 Yúbèi Lù, Yubei Road – started from about 101 yuan. The smart-budget and business band ran about 256 to 390: 鸿泰 Hóngtài on the upper floors of an office tower, 利安 Lì’ān above the department store, 华翔 Huáxiáng on Yubei Road, and 恩季M Ēnjì M on 站东路 Zhàndōng Lù, Zhandong Road, the late arrivals’ pick. The upper band: a 汉庭 Hàntíng room in the Sanxia Square commercial building at 9 天陈路 Tiānchén Lù, Tianchen Road, from about 539, 柏天 Bǎitiān on 小新街 Xiǎoxīn Jiē, Xiaoxin Street, from about 541, the Atour on 汉渝路 Hànyú Lù, Hanyu Road, some 500 metres from the metro by its listing with a book-lined lobby lounge, and the 丽苑维景 Lìyuàn Wéijǐng international hotel beside the station. Every figure is a snapshot that floats.
Three boundaries keep the piece honest. Against the campus quarter’s student prices to the west: that register books by the academic calendar, its article standing on its own here. Against the river rooms of Shabin Road: that market sells the water, and these rooms sell the exit. And against the tower-lobby registers of the city’s other banks: those are other districts’ stories, and no rival lift here stops closer to a platform.
Practicalities
Price. In an October 2026 platform snapshot the hub ran from about 101 to past 541 yuan a night: hostel bunks from about 101, smart-budget and business rooms from about 256 to 390, and the mall-side upper band from about 539 upward, with the international hotel above them. Weekday supply is deep, but holiday weeks and fair dates lift the band; travellers off the last Chengdu trains should pick addresses on 站东路 Zhàndōng Lù or 天陈路 Tiānchén Lù, both walkable to the concourse. Prices fluctuate seasonally; check current rates, and treat every figure as a snapshot that floats.
Address. 重庆市沙坪坝区三峡广场 Zhòngqìng Shì Shāpíngbà Qū Sānxiá Guǎngchǎng, Sanxia Square, Shapingba District, Chongqing – the addresses ring the station block: 天陈路 Tiānchén Lù, Tianchen Road, at 9 and 15, 小新街 Xiǎoxīn Jiē, Xiaoxin Street, at 83, 汉渝路 Hànyú Lù, Hanyu Road, at 19, and the value band along 渝碚路 Yúbèi Lù and 站东路 Zhàndōng Lù.
Rooms. The stock is vertical: business rooms above retail, apartment-style floors in office towers, one mall-building chain room with the escalators for a hallway. Confirm floor, lift access and noise-facing – some rooms listen to the trains – and book by minutes-to-platform, not by any platform-awarded star. Exact room counts are not confirmed in government or operator sources, so any precise figure is the platform’s own.
Getting there. Arrive by design: the 成渝高铁 Chengdu-Chongqing high-speed line stops at 沙坪坝站 Shāpíngbà Zhàn itself – under an hour from Chengdu – and the hub’s underground interchange hands guests to Metro Line 1 at 沙坪坝 Shāpíngbà station without surfacing. Ciqikou is a direct Line 1 ride of a handful of stops; 江北国际机场 Jiāngběi Guójì Jīchǎng, Jiangbei International Airport, runs about 30 to 40 minutes by taxi by the listings’ estimate. Hub parking is extensive underground; hotel lots vary by tower.

A one-night script writes itself. Take the evening train in, ride the escalator into the mall’s food floor or out to the back lanes for hotpot, give the bookstore an hour, and let the sculptures do the after-dinner lap. Morning is the point of the address: a noodle breakfast at street level, the lift down, and the train pulling out from under the shopping district while the city is still deciding on its first tea. Few hotel districts in China put a guest on a high-speed train without a street crossing; this one does it without asking the weather.
flowcloud would say that Sanxia Square is the only hotel district in China where the lift shaft answers to a timetable, and that the correct way to sleep here is in whichever room keeps the fewest minutes between the duvet and the departure gate, because when the station is the basement, the concierge is a departure board.
Where to stay: the upscale room on Xiaoxin Street if the evening wants comfort with the trains underneath, the Atour on Hanyu Road if the lobby lounge is part of the plan, and a smart-budget room from about 256 if the train sets the hour – because at 三峡广场 Sānxiá Guǎngchǎng you are not choosing a hotel so much as choosing how much morning to keep.
