Staying in Sanya Bay
The stretch of 三亚湾 (Sānyà Wān, Sanya Bay) that runs along the city’s western edge is a long, graceful arc of sand and palm, with the sea on one side and the city on the other. And on the promenade that runs the length of it, in the late afternoon, the whole of Sanya seems to come out to walk.
This is the bay that most people actually live in Sanya around, and it is the one that best combines the island’s two great appeals: you are on the beach, and you are in the city. If 亚龙湾 is the resort bay and 海棠湾 is the luxury bay, 三亚湾 is the practical one — the place where the beach and the everyday life of the city meet.
The Long, Lived-In Bay
Sanya Bay stretches for roughly twenty-two kilometres along the city’s west-facing coast, and the whole length is fringed by the 椰梦长廊 (Yēmèng Chángláng, the “Coconut Dream Corridor”) — a broad, palm-lined promenade and green belt that runs between the road and the sand. It is one of the most beloved bits of public space on the island, and at dusk it is where everybody goes.
The bay is different from the big resort bays because it is genuinely a city beach. The city comes right down to it. There are hotels and guesthouses of all kinds strung along the waterfront, from large four-star resorts to small budget family places in the streets behind, and there is a real local life in the neighbourhoods on the landward side — restaurants, seafood places, small shops, the hum of an actual city.
Because it faces west, 三亚湾 is also the bay for sunsets. The sun drops into the South China Sea directly in front of the promenade, and the evening light on the water is the reason the 椰梦长廊 is so crowded at that hour.
The Staying, in Two Kinds
The accommodation in 三亚湾 falls into two broad categories, and the difference matters.
The first is the beachfront hotels — the larger properties with rooms directly over the sand and the promenade. These give you the best of both worlds: the sea outside your window, and the city’s restaurants and life a short walk behind you. Prices are lower than the big resort bays, and the atmosphere is less rarefied and more lived-in.
The second is the budget and mid-range options in the streets behind the beach. These are cheaper, and you trade a sea view for easy access to the city and a lower bill. It is the sort of place where a family can get a decent, clean room for a modest price and walk to the beach and to dinner.
The Everyday Advantages
There is a strong practical case for basing yourself in 三亚湾, and it comes down to convenience.
You are close to the centre of Sanya, which means you can reach the city’s sights, the 第一市场 (First Market) seafood street, the old streets and a lot of everyday eating without a long trip. You are also not far from the 凤凰岛 (Phoenix Island) and the 三亚湾 sunset viewpoint. It is the bay that is easiest to make a base and do other things from.
Because it is a long bay, though, 三亚湾 is not homogeneous. The stretch nearest the city centre is busier and more built-up; the western end, toward 天涯 and the airport, is longer and quieter. Know which part of the bay you are in when you book — the difference is noticeable.
The Catch
The honest trade-off is that 三亚湾 is not the most beautiful beach in Sanya. The water here is not the dazzling clear turquoise of 亚龙湾, because the bay is broad and shallow and the sea is a little less pristine. It is a good, workaday, swimmable beach, and it is genuinely lovely at sunset, but the water quality and photography are not the point. You are choosing convenience and life over postcard water.
There is also the matter of the crowds. Because it is the city’s beach, 三亚湾 is busy much of the time, especially in the afternoon and evening on the promenade. If you want a quieter stretch, head toward the western end of the bay.

三亚湾 is for people who want to be in Sanya — not in a resort, but in the city. It is for families who want a cheap and convenient base, for people who plan to spend their days out seeing things and just need somewhere clean and central to come back to, and for anyone who wants the sunset promenade walk every evening.
