Phoenix Island, Beds at the Xisha Cruise’s Only Door

三亚凤凰岛国际邮轮港 Sānyà Fènghuángdǎo Guójì Yóulún Gǎng, the Sanya Phoenix Island International Cruise Port, is the door every Xisha sailing goes through, and it stands in 三亚市天涯区 Sānyà Shì Tiānyá Qū, Tianya District, Sanya City, in 海南省 Hǎinán Shěng, Hainan Province, beside 凤凰岛 Fènghuáng Dǎo, Phoenix Island, near the eastern side of the 天涯海角 Tiānyáhǎijiǎo headland. One thing has to be said before anything else: this piece is filed under 三沙市 Sānshā Shì, Sansha City, and it is not about Sansha at all. The hotels and apartments described below are addresses in Sanya, and are deliberately not Sansha addresses. Sansha, the prefecture-level city that governs the 西沙群岛 Xīshā Qúndǎo, the Xisha Islands, the 中沙群岛 Zhōngshā Qúndǎo, the Zhongsha Islands and the 南沙群岛 Nánshā Qúndǎo, the Nansha Islands, with their waters, all three archipelagos being Chinese territory, keeps no bookable room for a visitor, and its seat on 永兴岛 Yǒngxīng Dǎo, Yongxing Island, is not open to ordinary travellers. What this port gives a Sansha-bound traveller is the last ordinary bed before boarding, and for anyone catching a cruise that leaves in the early afternoon, or returning late and not wanting to move again, that bed is the practical beginning and end of the trip.

The port itself is a substantial piece of water engineering and it has the numbers to prove it. It was built and trialled in November 2006, opened formally in 2007, and is described by the city as China’s first international cruise-dedicated port, with an 80,000-tonne berth in service. Passengers bound for the Xisha usually board at the No. 2 berth joint-inspection building, and the port is reached from the coastal road across a bridge of 394 metres by 17 metres from 光明路 Guāngmíng Lù, Guangming Road, with local buses 9, 15, 19, 25 and 26 stopping at the Phoenix Island stop. Its traffic record is given officially as more than 1,600 cruise calls and 2.03 million passengers up to December 2024, and in the first half of 2024 it handled 54,624 international cruise-call passenger movements, the highest of any port in the country. A second berth of 100,000 tonnes is under construction, with a designed annual capacity of 420,000 passengers and the main structure of the wharf due by the end of 2026, which is to say that this door is getting wider while the city behind it stays as small as ever.

The beds around the port are a cluster of resorts, serviced apartments and family guesthouses on Phoenix Island itself, and in a platform snapshot of July 2026 they read as a ladder of price and proximity. 三亚凤凰岛度假酒店 Sānyà Fènghuángdǎo Dùjià Jiǔdiàn, the Sanya Phoenix Island Resort Hotel, stands about 340 metres from the cruise centre and scored 9.3 out of 10 across 4,522 reviews, from about HK$422 to 433, with an outdoor pool, a gym, a Chinese restaurant and a sea-view restaurant. 三亚凤凰岛海洋之星度假酒店 Sānyà Fènghuángdǎo Hǎiyáng zhī Xīng Dùjià Jiǔdiàn, the Ocean Star Resort Hotel, is about 150 metres from the port, at 9.2 across 3,591 reviews, from about HK$133. 三亚凤凰岛至尊海景度假酒店 Sānyà Fènghuángdǎo Zhìzūn Hǎijǐng Dùjià Jiǔdiàn, the Supreme Sea View Resort Hotel, at about 140 metres, reads 8.0 across 230 reviews, from about HK$196 to 226. 三亚湾凤凰岛追梦海上度假酒店 Sānyà Wān Fènghuángdǎo Zhuīmèng Hǎishàng Dùjià Jiǔdiàn, the Dream Chaser Sea Resort Hotel, about 240 metres away, reads 8.7 across 709 reviews, from about HK$137 to 159. 三亚凤凰岛星河湾海上公寓 Sānyà Fènghuángdǎo Xīnghéwān Hǎishàng Gōngyù, the Star River Bay sea apartments, about 240 metres, reads 8.9 across 1,031 reviews, from about HK$120 to 132, and keeps luggage storage, which is exactly what a cruise passenger needs. 米奥米亲子海景民宿(三亚凤凰岛店), a family sea-view guesthouse on the island, is about 170 metres from the port, at 9.8 across 64 reviews, but from about HK$1,244. Every figure is a platform snapshot, the distances are the platform’s own, and all of it floats.

What the cluster is for is a single afternoon and a single morning. Boarding for the Xisha cruise falls in a window the trade puts at 13:30 to 16:00, so a traveller arriving by air on the day of sailing needs a bed minutes from the berth, and one returning in the evening with a next-day flight needs the same in reverse. That is the entire function of this selection: not a Sanya holiday, and not a Sansha address. What the city on the other side of the water holds is the contrast this piece exists to make: 三沙市 Sānshā Shì, Sansha City, is the southernmost, largest by land-and-sea area, smallest by land and least populous prefecture-level city in China, roughly 13 to 30 square kilometres of land scattered across about two million square kilometres of land and sea, with no island that takes a visitor overnight. The only route in for an ordinary visitor is this cruise, a sailing that is at present open only to mainland Chinese residents who file under real-name registration, with age and health conditions set by the operator’s latest notice. You sleep in Sanya because that is the last place in China where anyone can.

What the Rooms Are Like

The rooms here divide by function rather than by style. A resort room at the Phoenix Island hotels buys a pool, a restaurant and a short walk to the berth; a sea-facing apartment buys space, a kitchen and often luggage storage, which matters when a cruise keeps your bag for four days; a family guesthouse buys room for children at a higher rate. Ask for the distance to the No. 2 berth joint-inspection building rather than to the island in general, since a property close to one part of the island can be a long walk from the berth. Confirm whether breakfast starts before the boarding window, since an early departure can beat the buffet, and check the checkout time against a late return. The figures above are platform snapshots from July 2026 and every one of them floats.

Practicalities

Price. On the July 2026 platform snapshot the Phoenix Island group ran from about HK$120 to 132 for the Star River Bay sea apartments, about HK$133 for the Ocean Star Resort Hotel, about HK$137 to 159 for the Dream Chaser, about HK$196 to 226 for the Supreme Sea View and about HK$422 to 433 for the Sanya Phoenix Island Resort Hotel, with the family guesthouse above HK$1,244. Every figure is a snapshot that floats and should be checked with the platform on the day.

Address. These are 三亚市天涯区 Sānyà Shì Tiānyá Qū, Tianya District, Sanya City, addresses on and around 凤凰岛 Fènghuáng Dǎo, Phoenix Island, reached across the bridge from 光明路 Guāngmíng Lù, Guangming Road, with bus routes 9, 15, 19, 25 and 26 stopping at the Phoenix Island stop. They are not addresses in 三沙市 Sānshā Shì, Sansha City, and no property here should be described as a Sansha hotel, however close it sits to the berth.

Rooms. Choose by the clock and the bag: a hotel room with a pool if the sailing is the next day and comfort matters, an apartment with a kitchen and luggage storage if the trip is a family one, and a guesthouse if children need space. Book within walking distance of the No. 2 berth if the boarding window is tight, and confirm both the breakfast time and the checkout time against your sailing, because those two hours decide whether the last night of a Sansha trip is calm or a scramble.

Getting there. The port stands in 三亚市天涯区 Sānyà Shì Tiānyá Qū, Tianya District, Sanya City, and is reached by road across the bridge from 光明路 Guāngmíng Lù, Guangming Road, or on buses 9, 15, 19, 25 and 26 to the Phoenix Island stop. From here the Xisha cruise runs south, landing passengers by tender by day and sleeping them aboard at night, in a boarding window the trade puts at 13:30 to 16:00. There is no free travel and no day ticket, and the route is at present open only to mainland Chinese residents who file under real-name registration, with age and health conditions from the operator’s latest notice. All distances and times are snapshots to confirm against navigation and the operator.

Where to stay: a sea-view apartment or hotel room on 凤凰岛 Fènghuáng Dǎo, Phoenix Island, if the last bed before the berth is the point, and a family guesthouse if children are travelling, all of it 三亚市天涯区 Sānyà Shì Tiānyá Qū, Tianya District, Sanya City, which is the departure port for 三沙市 Sānshā Shì, Sansha City, and not Sansha itself.

flowcloud would say that every journey to a place with no rooms begins at a place with too many, and that the correct way to sleep before Sansha is in an apartment with a luggage store and a view of the water you are about to cross, because the last bed in China is not in the southernmost city but in the one where the boat is tied up.
