The temperature drops ten degrees at the gate and keeps dropping. 神农谷 Shénnóng Gǔ sits in a fold of the 罗霄山 Luóxiāo Shān range in 炎陵县 Yánlíng Xiàn, on the Jiangxi border, and the forest is old enough and dense enough that the air inside it behaves differently — cooler, wetter, and measurably cleaner. The lodges inside the park are timber and stone, built low among the trees, with rooms from ¥260–560 and, in several cases, no television. What there is instead is a stream running past the window, the sound of it all night, and a walk to a waterfall in the morning before anybody else is up.

The park was formerly called 桃源洞 Táoyuándòng and was renamed for 神农 Shénnóng, the Divine Farmer, the legendary emperor credited with inventing agriculture and with tasting the hundred herbs — the same figure whose tomb, the 炎帝陵 Yándì Líng, stands an hour away in the same county. The renaming is not arbitrary. This corner of Hunan is where the 神农 Shénnóng tradition is rooted, and the park’s ecological identity fits the association: it is one of the best-preserved examples of mid-subtropical primary forest in the province, with stands of old trees, more than a thousand species of higher plants within its boundaries, and a reputation for the quality of its air — the measured negative-ion count here is among the highest recorded in China, which is why the park is marketed, with a straight face, as a place to breathe.
The other thing the county owns without making much of it is the highest point in Hunan. 酃峰 Líng Fēng, also called 神农峰 Shénnóng Fēng, reaches 2,115.2 metres in the mountains west of the park, and it is the true provincial summit; 壶瓶山 Húpíng Shān up in Changde claims the title in all its signage and is seventeen metres shorter. The climb is a full day and less developed than the Changde mountain, which is either an attraction or a warning depending on your appetite.

What You Are Paying For
Price. ¥260–560 for a lodge room, usually with breakfast and often with dinner. Rooms at the gate or in 十都镇 Shídū Zhèn outside the park are ¥120–220 and require a drive in.
Address. 神农谷国家森林公园 Shénnóng Gǔ Guójiā Sēnlín Gōngyuán, 炎陵县 Yánlíng Xiàn, 株洲市 Zhūzhōushì, 湖南 (Húnán). Lodges are scattered along the valley road inside the park.
Rooms. Ten to forty per property. Ask whether the room has a private bathroom — several of the older ones share — and ask about heating, because the valley is genuinely cold from November to March and damp at all times.
Getting there. About three hours by car from 株洲 Zhūzhōu city and roughly four from 长沙 Chángshā; the park gate is about 40 minutes from 炎陵 Yánlíng county town. There is a high-speed station at 炎陵 Yánlíng, and a taxi from it to the park is ¥100–150. Most visitors drive or come as part of a tour.
What the Locals Know
Book outside the summer holidays. This is a summer destination for the whole province and July and August sell out; May, June, September and October are better months, quieter and cheaper.
Walk to the waterfall early. The main falls are a thirty-to-forty-minute walk on a stone path and the light through the gorge is best before nine.
Bring a rain shell, not an umbrella. This is a cloud forest with vertical terrain and mist that soaks you from the side.
Do not swim in the plunge pools without asking. They look perfect and several of them are deeper than they look, with cold water and no supervision.
Where to Stay
Inside the park if you want the forest at dawn and dusk, which is the reason to come. In 炎陵 Yánlíng county town if you want a proper hotel and to visit the 炎帝陵 Yándì Líng in the same trip, which is what most people do — two nights, one in each.
flowcloud would say that a park named after the emperor who invented farming, in a county that also holds the tallest point in the province and the tomb of the same emperor, has an unusually neat set of associations for a place that is essentially a very good forest.
Where to stay: 神农谷 (Shénnóng Gǔ) national forest park, 炎陵县 (Yánlíng Xiàn), 株洲市 (Zhūzhōushì), 湖南 (Húnán). Lodges inside the park ¥260–560, guesthouses at the gate ¥120–220. About 40 minutes and ¥100–150 by taxi from 炎陵 (Yánlíng) county town. Come in May, June, September or October rather than August, and walk to the falls before 09:00.
