Beds Built Above the Computer Malls

Chongqing is a municipality of southwest China, and 九龙坡区 Jiǔlóngpō Qū Jiulongpo is its south-west district, on the west bank of the 嘉陵江 Jiālíng Jiāng, Jialing River. Its commercial gravity sits on one corner: 石桥铺 Shíqiáopù, Shiqiaopu, where the city’s wholesale electronics trade has run since the 1990s. The rooms here were never built for visitors. They were built for the merchants, the fixers and the buyers who needed to sleep near the trading floor – chain business rooms inside the office towers, monthly-let apartments converted out of the same buildings, plain budget rooms over the small counters of the 科园 Kēyuán street grid. A bed here is priced by how fast you can get back down to that floor.

The Shiqiaopu wholesale computer streets in the late evening, shopfronts lit along the kerb and the pavement busy past closing time.

The timeline is short and well documented. In 1998, under the district’s high-tech development zone administration, the first true computer hall, 渝州电脑城 Yùzhōu diànnǎo chéng, Yuzhou Computer City, went up on Shiqiaopu and marked the city’s first cluster of digital-product sellers; in April 1999 the 泰兴 Tàixīng communications and computer market opened with better surroundings; in 2000 the 赛博 Sàibó, Cyber, digital plaza arrived and the scattered dealers converged on the corner. A 2007 account put the four malls then standing back to back on that one street at close to 150,000 square metres of floor and more than seventy per cent of the city’s computer-market turnover, with annual sales over ten billion yuan – a 2007 reporting figure, and a single source at that.

What decides a bed here is the shape, not the total: a strip so dense that every trader is a few doors from every other, and where the only competitor is the shop downstairs. An anchor followed in 2011, when 华硕 Huáshuò, ASUS, signed for its second China operating headquarters on the street. Then the clock turned: a mall opened on the corner in 2019, and on 20 May 2021 the manager of 佰腾数码广场 Bàiténg shùmǎ guǎngchǎng, the Baiteng Digital Plaza, told tenants it would close on 30 June that year, with six floors and three hundred tenants inside.

The street grid of Shiqiaopu after dark, low shopfronts under the towers and the last merchants still taking stock.

The site did not simply reopen. After the closure the building stood idle through a stalled refurbishment, the property side took it back at the start of 2025 and re-let it, and on 2 March 2026 the district government announced work had begun at 石杨路13号 Shíyánglù 13 hào: the 九龙星环广场 Jiǔlóng Xīnghuán Guǎngchǎng, Jiulong Star Ring Plaza, a 36,000-square-metre operating area on a stated investment of 230 million yuan, with a first-year target of five million visitors. That target is a developer’s projection published at the groundbreaking, not a measured footfall, and the reopening date has moved more than once. The consequence for a traveller is narrow and firm: the bed stock around the corner is office-tower rooms, not shopping-mall rooms, and the metro work is at 石桥铺站 Shíqiáopù Zhàn, where Line 1 has run since 28 July 2011 and Line 5 since 20 January 2021.

Three boundaries keep this piece in its lane. Against the river districts’ tower-lobby register: that market sells the skyline, and Shiqiaopu has no skyline to sell. Against the campus quarter’s student bands to the north-west: those are another district’s economics. And against this district’s own reworked estate blocks, written elsewhere as renewed housing: this corner is the opposite model, an unrenovated 1990s trading strip where the beds came out of the office towers because the traders needed somewhere to sleep.

Practicalities

Price. No rate is printed here: rates on this corner are re-ranked monthly by the platforms, so a figure printed today would be wrong by festival week. The shape of the ladder is what can be said. The bottom rung is plain rooms over the small counters of the 科园 Kēyuán streets, the kind a merchant takes while a repair waits. The middle rung is the chain business room inside a tower, priced for a desk and a reliable bed. The top rung is the serviced and long-let apartment let by the month, where most of this corner’s overnight stock lives.

Address. 重庆市九龙坡区石桥铺 Zhòngqìng Shì Jiǔlóngpō Qū Shíqiáopù, Shiqiaopu, Jiulongpo District, Chongqing – with the towers and rented flats along 渝州路 Yùzhōu Lù, Yuzhou Road and 石杨路 Shíyánglù, and behind them the 科园 Kēyuán grid, whose 科园四路 Kēyuán sì lù carries the designated night market street.

Rooms. Three stocks, all business-shaped: chain rooms in working office towers; self-contained monthly apartments in the same towers with a kitchenette and a washer; and plain budget rooms over street-level shops, where the window looks onto a service lane. Confirm whether the room faces a trading floor or a courtyard, because the courtyard-facing room is the quiet one.

Getting there. Metro Line 1 and Line 5 both stop at 石桥铺 Shíqiáopù, whose exits are numbered off 渝州路 Yùzhōu Lù and 科园一路 Kēyuán yī lù, and on whose Line 5 side the southern section terminates; Line 1 runs direct to 解放碑 Jiěfàngbēi, Jiefangbei, and 磁器口 Cíqìkǒu, Ciqikou. Buses run the grid to 渝高公园 Yùgāo Gōngyuán and 巴山 Bāshān; parking is underground in the towers. From 江北国际机场 Jiāngběi Guójì Jīchǎng, Jiangbei International Airport, allow a long taxi ride.

A business hotel room on a tower floor above the trading streets, the desk by the window and the working city laid out below.

A night on this corner runs on a merchant’s clock, not a tourist’s. Morning is the quietest hour, the corridors empty and the trading floor being swept. Midday is the busiest. Afternoon belongs to the fitters and the queues. The evening is the part the street is famous for, because the trade does not stop at six: the wholesale floors are still lit, the small counters are still serving, and a room within five minutes of them is worth more than a room with a view. The old Baiteng shell is being rebuilt, but the beds are not in it and never were.

flowcloud would say that Shiqiaopu is the only trading street in Chongqing where a room’s price is set by a merchant’s turnover on the day, and that the correct way to sleep here is a tower room five minutes from the counter you have to be at nine hours tomorrow, because this quarter does not sell a view – it sells proximity to a floor of stock.

Where to stay: a chain business room in a working tower for the desk, the lift and a bed that is not a gamble; a monthly-let apartment if the stay runs past a week and you want a kitchenette; and a plain room over the 科园 Kēyuán counters if the budget is the point – because at 石桥铺 Shíqiáopù, Shiqiaopu, the bed is not above the shopping, it is above the trading, and that is a different thing to wake up inside.
