The stay of choice at 束河古镇 Shùhé Gǔchéng Shuhe Old Town is the boutique courtyard – a 民宿 mínsù small stay in a Naxi house or a new build with a snow-view terrace, in a town that is free to enter, quieter than Dayan, and part of the same UNESCO property. Shuhe sits about 4 km north-west of 大研古城 Dàyán Gǔchéng on the Lijiang plain, closer to the foot of 玉龙雪山 Yùlóng Xuěshān, which is why the upper floors and terraces here face the peaks rather than the roofs. The geography explains the trade. 束河 Shùhé was the caravan town – the 茶马古道 Chámǎ Gǔdào Tea-Horse Road floor with the 青龙桥 Qīnglóngqiáo Ming bridge and the 九鼎龙潭 Jiǔdǐng Lóngtán spring – and its stay ring grew around the villages that surround the old lanes: 荣华 Rónghuá, 东康 Dōngkāng, 松云 Sōngyún, 仁里 Rénlǐ and 开文 Kāiwén, each a cluster of small properties with names rather than numbers. The two poles are exact: the 悦榕庄 Yuèróngzhuāng sits about 900 m from the town at the mountain’s foot with snow-facing villas, and the core-lane courtyards sit inside the 束河 Shùhé grid where the water still runs. Because the plain tilts up toward the mountain, the view is a floor question – ask which floor faces 玉龙 Yùlóng and whether the terrace is shared. The villages ring a town whose own craft was leather: the 皮匠村 Píjiàng Cūn tanners’ quarter sent 一根锥子走天下 yī gēn zhuīzi zǒu tiānxià – one awl travelling the world – with the caravans, and the courtyard stock the inns converted is the old trade’s housing stock, which is why a Shuhe room is a workroom’s bones with a hotel’s bed in it. The comparison with Dayan is the town’s own axis: Dayan sells the water and the lanes, Shuhe sells the quiet and the snow.
Practical shape: Shuhe is car-friendlier than Dayan – cars reach the town edge and park at the 北门 Běimén lot or the inn’s own yard, which is why this is the stay for drivers and for anyone with real luggage. Book two nights, and make the pairing explicit: one Shuhe night for the quiet and the view, one Dayan night for the lanes and the water. The three checks are the same as anywhere at altitude – hot water, heating between November and March, and whether the room actually faces the mountain. The 茶马古道博物馆 Chámǎ Gǔdào Bówùguǎn (about 30 yuan, closed Mondays) and the 哈里谷 Hālǐgǔ valley (a free photo-set quarter) fill a slow afternoon, and the 四方听音 Sìfāng Tīngyīn square is the evening stage. The 清溪水库 Qīngxī Shuǐkù reservoir to the west is the local sunset address, a short ride out for the end of the day. Shuhe’s entry is free; the peaks to avoid or pre-book are 春节 Chūnjié, 国庆 Guóqìng and the summer weeks. Check the current band prices and the taxi fare from Dayan (about 6 km, 15-20 minutes, roughly 15-25 yuan).
The Stays
Budget (≈110–200 yuan): 丽江溯源精品雪山观景客栈 Lìjiāng Sùyuán (东康6组13号, from about 113 yuan, 4.9), 丽江墨香居精品客栈 Mòxiāngjū (束河北门 Shùhé Běimén, 仁里一村4号院, from about 139 yuan, 4.9), and 丽江束河漫山草堂雪山观景精品客栈 Mànshān Cǎotáng (北门停车场文明村一组15号, about 193 yuan, 4.7) hold the cheap band – snow-view rooms in village courtyards, 大床 dàchuáng and 双床 shuāngchuáng, with the mountain as the amenity. The honest floor is an upper room in a village house, and the check is whether the terrace faces 玉龙 Yùlóng or the yard.
Upscale (≈400–1,600 yuan): 丽江悦榕庄 Lìjiāng Yuèróngzhuāng Banyan Tree Lijiang (束河龙泉路34号, 123 rooms, from about 1,564 yuan – snow-facing villas at the mountain’s foot, about 900 m from the old lanes) is the top of the band; 淳时·可甄山房 Chúnshí (龙泉居委会仁里四社10号, from about 366 yuan, 4.9, 275 reviews, a Song-style courtyard) and 丽江束河情人结精品客栈 Qíngrénjié (小吧黎停车场后, from about 239 yuan, 4.9) are the design-courtyard middle; 金茂璞宿·Jokul光影美学观山美墅 Jīnmào Pǔsù (香江路金茂雪山语留园20栋, 4.9) is the villa row. The honest shape is that 400-1,600 buys the snow view and the quiet, not a gym.
Getting there: about 4-6 km north-west of the Dayan core – taxi in 15-20 minutes (roughly 15-25 yuan) or bus to the town edge; cars can reach the 北门 Běimén lot and the inn yards, so luggage rolls rather than carries. The 丽江-束河-白沙 Lìjiāng-Shùhé-Báishā tourist line links the two old towns along the plain (about 5 yuan). The town itself is free and open, and the paid sights inside are the 茶马古道博物馆 Chámǎ Gǔdào Bówùguǎn (about 30 yuan, closed Mondays) and 哈里谷 Hālǐgǔ (a free photo-set quarter). Give a driver the inn name plus 束河古镇 Shùhé Gǔchéng, and confirm which village the address is in, because the ring is five villages wide.
