Wake to the Lake: Resorts on Taihu’s Northern Shore

The resorts earn their keep at dawn and dusk. Morning mist burns off the reeds while the terraces serve congee and lake shrimp; evening turns the bays gold and the lawns into the evening’s whole program. Between the bookends, the shore offers the peninsula park, the ferry piers and cycling paths that link the bays – a car helps, but resort shuttles cover the classic loop.

The workhorse tier is the lakeside resort row near the park gates: family rooms, pools and buffet breakfasts facing the water – the easy pick for a shore weekend.
The character tier is the village inns in the fishing settlements: small courtyards, home cooking with the day’s catch, and reed walks out the back door – the lake at fisherman’s hours.
The comfort tier is the spa resorts toward Mashan: suites with lake-facing tubs, lawns for the kids, and dinners built on the three whites – the slow-motion splurge.
