Downtown hotels compete on front-desk polish and breakfast timing more than on lobbies – staff here are used to guests squeezing a wetland morning in before checkout.

Proximity is the argument. From a room on the axis, 凤城河 Fèngchéng Hé Fengcheng River and its Wanghai Tower are minutes away on foot, the old street’s lantern lanes an evening stroll, and the morning-tea houses open before the first buses – the whole itinerary of the old town runs on short walks, and the gansi breakfast is under the window.

The workhorse tier is the business chains along the Pozi Street axis: compact twins, strong showers, reliable breakfast from seven – the function pick for a two-night sight sprint.

The character tier is the smaller renovated properties in the lanes behind the axis: warmer timber, quieter corridors, and the tea houses below – the pick for travellers who would rather walk to dinner than ride.

The comfort tier is the full-service towers toward the river end: atrium lobbies, club floors, river-view kings and big breakfast halls – the splurge that still undercuts the same room in Nanjing by a third.
