Guesthouses in the Green Valley: Stays in Tonglu

桐庐住宿 Tónglú Zhùsù the Tonglu stays are the mountain-valley idyll of 杭州市 Hángzhōu Shì Hangzhou City’s west – guesthouses folded into tea terraces and bamboo slopes above the 富春江 Fùchūn Jiāng Fuchun River, white-walled courtyards with coffee bars, infinity pools pointed at the mist and owners who cook what the valley picked that morning. Tonglu invented the modern 民宿 mínsù boom in Zhejiang and still sets its standard: design-forward conversions of old farmhouses, clusters around 芦茨村 Lúcī Cūn Luci Village and the hills above the gorges, and a price ladder that runs from family rooms to architect suites. The deal is the setting – cave, gorges and river days downstairs, a valley dinner and creek-sound sleep upstairs.

The cluster villages do the hosting: Luci’s riverside row keeps a dozen renovated courtyards in walking distance, hillside lodges hang terraces over the fog line, and pool-side mornings here made the county’s photography reputation. Weekends book out from the city; midweek is quiet luxury.

With a valley base, the days string themselves – the gorges by boat, the caves before lunch, a raft drift in the afternoon – and the evenings are the dividend: creek tables, grilled river fish, and the mist rolling back in to reset the scenery for morning.

The splurge tier is the design guesthouses with valley pools and floor-to-ceiling mist windows: chef’s breakfasts, pick-up from the county town – the stay that fills a whole weekend on its own terrace.

The character tier is the renovated farmhouse courtyards around Luci village: stone walls, tea gardens out back, home dinners at long tables – the authentic valley pick.

The value tier is the family minshu in the county town and riverside rows: clean doubles, ten minutes’ drive to every trailhead – the base for a caves-and-gorges circuit on a budget.
