Where to Sleep in Tunchang Town, the Inland County Seat

屯城镇 Tún chéng zhèn is the seat of 屯昌县 Tún chāng xiàn, the inland county that 海南省 Hǎi nán shěng administers directly and that has not a metre of coastline on any side. The town covers 184.8 square kilometres and holds eight neighbourhood committees and twenty villages, and in 2017 it recorded 91,436 people. What matters about it for a traveller is a single administrative fact: the county government publishes a list of thirty-seven hotels and guesthouses, and every one of the thirty-seven is here. There is no second town in the county with a hotel strip, which is why a stop in 屯昌 means a stop in 屯城镇, and why the useful question is not where to sleep but how much of the ladder you want to buy.

The ladder is unusually complete and it starts absurdly low. Family inns and apartment-style lets begin around 68 to 110 yuan a night – 深蓝家庭旅馆 Shēn lán jiā tíng lǚ guǎn at about 68, 鑫泰旅租 Xīn tài lǚ zū at about 91, 洪力商务酒店 Hóng lì shāng wù jiǔ diàn at about 95, 威斯顿酒店 Wēi sī dùn jiǔ diàn at about 103 – and several of them take pets. The middle band from about 130 to 200 holds the national chains and the solid local business hotels, and the material’s own figures are 元行商务酒店 Yuán xíng shāng wù jiǔ diàn at about 144, 福源商务宾馆 Fú yuán shāng wù bīn guǎn at about 154, 城市便捷 Chéng shì biàn jié at about 177, 潮漫酒店 Cháo màn jiǔ diàn at about 184 and 非繁城品 Fēi fán chéng pǐn at about 189. Above that sit the newest comfortable properties, 水晶之缘度假酒店 Shuǐ jīng zhī yuán dù jià jiǔ diàn at about 227 to 245 with lake-view and star-sky rooms, and 维也纳国际酒店 Wéi yě nà guó jì jiǔ diàn at about 269. At the top is a single property, 香山云森酒店 Xiāng shān yún sēn jiǔ diàn, opened in 2023 with 92 rooms and a 650-mu flower garden in 岳寨村 at the edge of the 梦幻香山 Mèng huàn xiāng shān 4A scenic area, at roughly 459 to 604 yuan, rated first on the booking sites’ local luxury list though no national star-grading notice appears in the record. Guests report that it is genuinely hard to find, that the road in has been under repair and that the front desk has sometimes been staffed by one person.

The evening side of the town is newer than the beds. 屯昌县美食文化街 Tún chāng xiàn měi shí wén huà jiē, the food culture street on 文华路 Wén huá lù, reopened after an upgrade in mid-January 2025 with sixty stalls – other accounts say a hundred – laid out as a U-shaped corridor and selling more than two hundred kinds of snack, the county’s own 屯昌阉粉 Tún chāng yān fěn and 黑猪肉粽 hēi zhū ròu zòng beside the usual national repertoire. The province also names the 金竹园特色农产品创意街区 Jīn zhú yuán tè sè nóng chǎn pǐn chuàng yì jiē qū, the 中央绿园小吃街 Zhōng yāng lǜ yuán xiǎo chī jiē and the 文体公园夜市 Wén tǐ gōng yuán yè shì as the town’s other night sites, and reports that some 250 businesses across the county joined the county’s consumption alliance. Local reporting talks about weekend folk performances and a light show; that particular claim comes from user-generated pages rather than from the government, so treat it as something that may or may not be on. The eating worth planning around is simpler: a bowl of 黑猪肉涮粉 hēi zhū ròu shuàn fěn, black-pig slices poached for three seconds in pork-bone broth, which is the county’s breakfast, and the shops along 中兴路 Zhōng xīng lù that the provincial government’s own site has named. Friday and Saturday evenings are busier; the county’s hotel occupancy runs at about 47 per cent, which is the number that tells you a weekday room is cheap and a holiday room is not.

Two sights sit close enough to the hotel strip to fill an afternoon without a car. 羊角岭 Yáng jiǎo lǐng, 4 kilometres south of the town, is the crystal mine that was worked by force under the Japanese from 1942 to 1945, when more than two thousand labourers were conscripted and 138 tonnes of crystal ore were taken out, of which 93 tonnes were shipped away; later renamed mine 701 and given the cover name 第一信箱, First Letterbox, it stayed secret for more than twenty years and supplied the quartz for Mao Zedong’s crystal coffin. The main ore body is 240 metres long, 90 to 130 metres wide and 150 metres deep, with proven piezo-electric quartz reserves of nearly 80 tonnes and more than 2,000 tonnes of smelting quartz, and the county describes it as the second largest crystal mine yet found in the world. The pit is now a pond of about 400 square metres of green water ringed by broken rock, reached by a dirt track, and it is the most un-county-town picture within four kilometres of the hotels. The other is 文赞生态湿地公园 Wén zàn shēng tài shī dì gōng yuán, a wetland park inside the town with a hundred mu of lotus and a resident egret population, which is where the town goes to walk. Both the 油画步行街 yóu huà bù xíng jiē and the town museum belong to the art-stay article in this batch, and the 屯昌县博物馆 Tún chāng xiàn bó wù guǎn has two addresses in the record, 文体路 and 文化路 38 号, which is worth knowing before setting out.

What the Rooms Are Like

A room in 屯城镇 is a standard Chinese county-town room and there is no mystery in it: a bed or two, split-unit air conditioning that doubles as the heater in January, a kettle, a television, a desk, a tiled or laminate floor and a shower. What separates the tiers is age, size, whether the window looks at a street or a wall, and whether the building has a lift, a breakfast room and a car park. Two local details are more use than the fittings. The first is the mahjong room. A 麻将房 má jiàng fáng, sometimes sold as a smart mahjong suite, appears on the room list of nearly every hotel in the county, from the cheap ones to the newest, and asking for a room away from the mahjong floor is the single most effective request a light sleeper can make in this town. The second is the plastic policy, which is province-wide and catches visitors out: since 1 January 2023 hotels, guesthouses and homestays across 海南 do not put out single-use plastic items, so the toothbrush, comb, razor, shower cap and small bottles will not be in the room unless you ask the desk. The newer buildings add smart controls, projector televisions, zero-pressure mattresses, service robots and cinema rooms, and the pet-friendly flags on a handful of the cheap inns are real.

Practicalities

Price. A double in 屯城镇 Tún chéng zhèn runs from about 68 yuan a night to about 604, and the bands are these: family inns and lets from about 68 to 110; the chain and business tier from about 130 to 200, which is the widest band and where most of the stock sits; the new comfortable hotels at about 227 to 270; and the one luxury-grade property at about 459 to 604. Occupancy of about 47 per cent tells the rest of the story – midweek is cheap and same-day booking usually works, while the 春节 week and the first days of October tighten. The material also carries two wider figures under different definitions, fifteen tourist hotels with 1,379 rooms and 2,935 beds, and seven registered accommodation businesses, which count different things rather than disagreeing. Treat every figure as a range and check the live rate.

Address. The hotels are in 屯城镇 Tún chéng zhèn, the seat of 屯昌县 Tún chāng xiàn, strung along 昌盛路 Chāng shèng lù and its first, second and third sections, 解放路 Jiě fàng lù, 文化路 Wén huá lù and 环东一路 Huán dōng yī lù, with the food street on 文华路, the art street on 兴业路 and the crystal mine 4 kilometres south of the centre.

Rooms. Ask for a room off the mahjong floor and, if you are sensitive to noise, off the street side, because 昌盛路 is the town’s main road. Ask whether the window opens, since the older economy buildings are sealed. Ask what the desk can give you in place of the plastic items the province no longer supplies. Ask about parking, which most of these hotels advertise free and which a few, including one of the newer chains, do not have at all. Ask whether breakfast is included and what time it starts, because a bowl of 黑猪肉涮粉 in the town costs a few yuan and beats most hotel buffets. And if you are here for the crystal mine or the wetland park, ask the desk for the driving time rather than the distance, because the last stretch to the pit is a dirt lane.

Getting there. 屯昌县 Tún chāng xiàn has no passenger railway station; 屯昌站 is a proposed stop on the proposed central-line high-speed railway and remains at the pre-feasibility stage. By coach, 海口 Hǎi kǒu is about 90 kilometres and 23 to 29 yuan, with departures from the main Haikou terminal and county buses leaving 屯昌车站 from six in the morning; by car the distance is about 94 kilometres and the province’s own tourism page times it at about two hours eight minutes, while the promotional line calls it an hour. From 三亚 Sān yà the coach is about 216 kilometres and two and a half hours. The nearest large airport is 琼海博鳌国际机场, 84 to 87 kilometres away and about 95 minutes by car. Inside the town everything is five to fifteen minutes by taxi and walkable in the flat parts, which is the reason to take a room on the street where the food is rather than out on the ring road.

Where to stay: a room in the middle of the ladder, around 150 to 200 yuan a night, at one of the business hotels on 昌盛路 Chāng shèng lù or 文化路 Wén huá lù in 屯城镇 Tún chéng zhèn, the seat of 屯昌县 Tún chāng xiàn, where the food street, the market breakfasts and the shops are on foot. Take the town for what it is rather than for what it lacks, ask to be kept off the mahjong floor, carry your own toothbrush, and spend the saved money on a day out to the crystal pit and the lotus park.

flowcloud would say that an inland county town which will let you sleep for sixty-eight yuan and will also sell you a suite in a flower garden for six hundred has done the honest thing and published the whole ladder at once – because the trick of a place like this is not the rooftop view, it is that the town has finally given people a reason to stop here instead of driving through.
