Budget Beds in Chongqing's College Town

Budget Beds in Chongqing’s College Town

Chongqing is a municipality of southwest China, and 沙坪坝区 Shāpíngbà Qū Shapingba is its north-west district, whose western edge the city rebuilt this century into 重庆大学城 Chóngqìng Dàxuéchéng, the Chongqing University Town. The premise was blunt: take the universities crowding the old city, give them a planned campus quarter across the streets of 虎溪 Hǔxī, Huxi, and let a student economy grow. It worked. Fourteen universities moved in, an evening retail strip called 熙街 Xījiē, Xijie, grew up to feed them, and the beds followed the syllabus – hostels, smart-budget chains and new mid-band rooms priced by allowance rather than by occasion. For a traveller the quarter is the quietest value register in the city, a direct metro ride from the river districts and a price band behind them.

Xijie, the student retail strip at the heart of the university town, keeps its busiest hours after the libraries close.

The timeline is short enough to check. The city government approved the project and broke ground in 2003; the first intake – some 20,000 new students of 重庆大学 Chóngqìng Dàxué, Chongqing University, and its neighbours – arrived in October 2005, by a single account, checked October 2026; the build was essentially complete by 2010, with fourteen universities installed; and Metro Line 1 reached the 大学城 Dàxuéchéng station at the end of 2012, by a single record. The planners pencilled in some 200,000 students and staff, not a census figure. Chongqing University itself is older than the plan – founded in 1929, its oldest halls on the district’s eastern side, with their own article on this site – but its student life now runs west, and the beds follow.

The institute that gives the quarter its colour is 四川美术学院 Sìchuān Měishù Xuéyuàn, the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, whose Huxi campus brought its murals and painted walls west: around the gates the hoardings read like an open-air gallery, and the east-gate lane is a small attraction in itself. The western science city designated from 2020 wraps the campus streets. What matters to a guest is the texture: an art-school quarter inside a campus town, priced like neither the tower districts nor the scenic centre, with Xijie’s grills and late-supper smoke setting the clock.

Murals and painted walls around the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute’s Huxi campus give the quarter its colour.

In an October 2026 platform snapshot the beds ran in three clean bands. The student strip: 美丽花园 Měilì Huāyuán on Xijie from about 150 yuan, 七鹿行 Qīlùxíng by the Huxi campus gate from about 159, and 悦伴湾 Yuèbànwān on 艺德路 Yìdé Lù from about 120 – plain rooms above the shops, among the cheapest named beds here. The smart-budget chains: 尚屋居 Shàngwūjū on 大学城中路 Dàxuéchéng Zhōnglù, Daxuecheng Zhonglu, from about 290, 枫象 Fēngxiàng nearby from about 333, 如家素柏·云 Rújiā Sùbǎi Yún on 大学城南路 Dàxuéchéng Nánlù from about 334, and a Vienna-brand house on 景阳路 Jǐngyáng Lù, Jingyang Road, from about 362. And the new mid band: the Atour on Jingyang Road, newly opened per its listing, from about 544, with projector-screen apartments near the art institute’s east gate. Every figure is a snapshot that floats.

Three boundaries keep this piece in its lane. Against the tower-hotel register of the river districts: that market sells the skyline, and this one has no skyline to sell – its view is a campus green and a wall of paint. Against the old town’s inns one metro stop and a world away: Ciqikou trades on a thousand years, the campus quarter on this century. And against the hub hotels at Sanxia Square: those beds are chosen by minutes-to-platform, these by distance to a lecture hall – the two registers share a metro line and nothing else.

Practicalities

Price. In an October 2026 platform snapshot the quarter ran from about 120 to about 544 yuan a night: student-strip rooms and hostels from about 120 to 159, smart-budget chains from about 290 to 362, and the new mid band from about 544. September’s opening season and graduation weeks tighten the small houses first; for the smallest inns an order often takes effect only after the host confirms – build in a day. Prices fluctuate seasonally; check current rates, and treat every figure as a snapshot that floats.

Address. 重庆市沙坪坝区大学城 Zhòngqìng Shì Shāpíngbà Qū Dàxuéchéng, University Town, Shapingba District, Chongqing – the hotels gather along 景阳路 Jǐngyáng Lù, Jingyang Road, 大学城中路 Dàxuéchéng Zhōnglù, Daxuecheng Zhonglu, and 大学城南路 Dàxuéchéng Nánlù, Daxuecheng Nanlu, with the student strip of 熙街 Xījiē, Xijie, at the quarter’s centre.

Rooms. The stock is plain shop-top rooms, smart-budget chain rooms and apartment-style short lets with kitchenettes and projector screens; book by distance – station side, gate side or strip side – rather than by any platform-awarded star. Exact room counts are not confirmed in government or operator sources, so any precise figure is the platform’s own.

Getting there. Metro Line 1 serves the quarter at 大学城 Dàxuéchéng, Daxuecheng, and 尖顶坡 Jiāndǐngpō, Jiandingpo, stations, and the same line runs direct to Ciqikou and the river districts, so the two registers pair in one stay. 江北国际机场 Jiāngběi Guójì Jīchǎng, Jiangbei International Airport, lies about an hour away by taxi by the listings’ own estimate. Many Jingyang Road houses advertise free parking with charging points; holiday crowds fill the strip’s kerbs first.

A new mid-band hotel room in the campus district, the standard of the rebuilt stock along Jingyang Road.

A day here runs on campus time. Morning coffee among backpacks near the station; a late-morning walk along the mural walls while the paint is still in shade; noon at a noodle counter where the most expensive line on the menu would not buy a starter downtown; an afternoon of campus gates; and the evening handed to Xijie, where the grills light up when the libraries close and the shared-bike ranks refill with the sound of twenty-year-olds arguing about nothing. Then the bed – clean, quiet, priced like a canteen tray – and the metro back into the city tomorrow, if the city is wanted at all.

flowcloud would say that the university town is the only district in Chongqing where the room rate is graded by the academic calendar, and that the correct way to sleep here is in the smart-budget room nearest the station at whatever the semester allows, because the whole quarter was built for twenty-year-olds and the hotels simply follow its syllabus.

Where to stay: the new Atour from about 544 yuan if the visit is a parental one with standards, a smart-budget chain room from about 290 to 362 if the metro does the measuring, and a student-strip bed from about 120 to 159 if the budget is the point – because at 熙街 Xījiē, Xijie, you are not booking a room in a suburb, you are booking the city’s cheapest quiet semester.
