外伶仃岛 Wàilíngdīng Dǎo, Wailingding Island, is the outermost inhabited islet of the 万山群岛 Wànshān Qúndǎo, the Wanshan Islands, in 珠海市 Zhūhǎi Shì, Zhuhai City, a prefecture-level city of 广东省 Guǎngdōng Shěng, Guangdong Province. It belongs to 香洲区 Xiāngzhōu Qū, Xiangzhou District, and is the seat of 担杆镇 Dāngǎn Zhèn, Dangan Town, which the 珠海万山海洋开发试验区 Zhūhǎi Wànshān Hǎiyáng Kāifā Shìyàn Qū, the Zhuhai Wanshan Marine Development Experimental Zone, administers on the city’s behalf; that zone is an economic function area and not a city district. The island was rated a national 4A scenic area in 2025, covers about 4.2 to 4.5 square kilometres, and rises to 伶仃峰 Língdīng Fēng, Lingding Peak, at 311.8 metres, high to the east and west and lower across the north and centre. It lies roughly 27.5 nautical miles west of the Xiangzhou shore and six nautical miles north of Cheung Chau off Hong Kong, China, and its name carries the whole of its situation at once: 伶仃 língdīng means alone and unsupported in the open sea, a phrase it inherits from 文天祥 Wén Tiānxiáng and the poem 《过零丁洋》 Guò Língdīng Yáng, Crossing the Lingding Yang, whose famous lines are carved into the rock at 金石公园 Jīnshí Gōngyuán, Jinshi Park, in 毛泽东 Máo Zédōng’s own hand. In this archipelago the ferry ticket is the gate, and everything else follows from it: you choose a bed only after you have secured a sailing, and if the sea gets up the sailing is cancelled and so is the bed.

Almost everything bookable here is one of two things. The first is 珠海外伶仃岛悠活酒店 Zhūhǎi Wàilíngdīng Dǎo Yōuhuó Jiǔdiàn, the Wailingding Youhuo Hotel, the only property of any scale on the island: it opened in 2022 with 49 rooms across four storeys, stands at 清风径 2 号 Qīngfēng Jìng 2 Hào, Qingfeng Lane No. 2, about a minute on foot from the pier by the booking platform’s own measurement, and is finished in a white Mediterranean style around a 240-square-metre multi-level infinity pool, with a coffee room, a reading room and a terrace. Its rooms run from sea-view and garden-view doubles to water-side loft rooms and a water-side family suite that looks over the water, and the platform tag attached to it, that the room connects to the pool, is a fair summary of what the money buys. Two cautions travel with the listing and are worth confirming before you sail: the property does not serve breakfast, and the front desk keeps 08:30 to 21:00, so a late arrival needs to be arranged in advance rather than assumed. In an October 2026 platform snapshot the hotel read 4.6 across 541 reviews, from about 1,544 yuan a night.
The second thing is the cluster behind it, and it is where most people actually sleep. The 伶仃湾 Língdīng Wān, Lingding Bay, urban-renewal blocks and a scatter of villagers’ houses converted into apartments, guest houses and family inns fill the ground between the pier and the hill. In the same October 2026 snapshot the spread ran from about 440 yuan at the 港岛家庭旅馆 Gǎngdǎo Jiātíng Lǚguǎn, Gangdao family inn, through 508 at the 鸿利客栈 Hónglì Kèzhàn, Hongli guest house, 588 at the 随园公寓 Suíyuán Gōngyù, Suiyuan apartment, and 701 at the 海景四季 Hǎijǐng Sìjì, Sea-View Four Seasons, up to 948 at the 悠闲雅阁 Yōuxián Yǎgé, Youxian Yage, with dozens of similar addresses folded into the renewal blocks and the lanes off 天祥路 Tiānxiáng Lù, Tianxiang Road, and 石涛苑 Shítāo Yuàn, Shitao Court. The room shapes lean to sea-view doubles and twins, tatami rooms, three-bedroom family flats with four beds, and small screening rooms with a projector or a bath. Be careful with the older names that still circulate for island lodgings, 听海楼 Tīnghǎi Lóu, Tinghai Tower, 浪晴湾宾馆 Làngqíngwān Bīnguǎn, Langqingwan guest house, and 水产宾馆 Shuǐchǎn Bīnguǎn, the fisheries guest house: they belong to an earlier period and should not be read as properties trading today.

The island is small enough to walk, and the walk is the point of coming. 石景公园 Shíjǐng Gōngyuán, Shijing Park, is a field of weathered granite that the local sources call the first natural rock park of the Wanshan group, with named stones such as the seal, the whale and the rooster, and a stairway of more than 1,200 steps running down towards 大东湾 Dàdōng Wān, Dadong Bay. The path the islanders call 玉带环腰 Yùdài Huányāo, the Jade Belt, runs about four kilometres along the shore on either side of the pier, water on one hand and hillside on the other, and 北帝晨钟 Běidì Chénzhōng, the Beidi morning bell, sets an eight-metre statue of the deity on the hillside with a great bell beside it. The island’s best-known prospect is the one the sources name 香江海市 Xiāngjiāng Hǎishì, the sea market towards Hong Kong, China, clear enough on a good day for the towers and the bridge line on that side. What surprises most visitors is the beach: for all the water, the shore is mostly rock, and the two sandy stretches together run only about a hundred metres, so this is a place for paths and cliffs rather than for sand. Reaching it, finally, is a fixture rather than a choice. Sailings leave 香洲港客运站 Xiāngzhōu Gǎng Kèyùnzhàn, the Xiangzhou Port Passenger Terminal, on the Qiaolü Middle Road north embankment, take about 70 minutes, run several times a day, and cost 140 yuan in ordinary class, 175 in first and 200 in VIP; buy through the operator’s official Xiangzhou Port account or over the counter with identity documents, one person to one ticket with no more than six tickets to an order. There is also a direct line from Shekou in Shenzhen, which travel platforms report at about 70 minutes. Cars stay on the mainland and the island takes no outside vehicles, so everything moves on foot or by the island’s electric sightseeing carts, and because sailings are weather-dependent you check the operator’s notice for the day before you travel. Set against 阳江海陵岛 Yángjiāng Hǎilíng Dǎo, Hailing Island in Yangjiang, which is a long coastline half an hour by taxi from a high-speed rail station, Wailingding is 27.5 nautical miles out and reachable only on a scheduled ferry; set against 潮州饶平海山岛 Cháozhōu Ràopíng Hǎishān Dǎo, Haishan Island in Raoping, Chaozhou, which is joined to the mainland by road and causeway, Wailingding has no bridge and no tunnel.
What the Rooms Are Like
Book by what you want the night to be, because the three options are genuinely different things. The single hotel gives you a proper room, a pool and a short walk to the ferry, and it is the only address here with a published room count; its water-side loft and family suite are the ones to ask for if the pool is why you came. The renewal-block apartments give you more space and a kitchen for a family or a group, with three-bedroom flats that sleep four or more, often at half the hotel rate. The villagers’ guest houses are the cheapest bed, from about 440 yuan, and they are simple rooms in occupied houses rather than hotel floors. Because the island rations its own water and power through systems of its own, supply differs between the busy season and the quiet one, so it is worth asking what is running on the dates you have in mind. And book the ferry first, every time: a room without a sailing is a room you cannot reach.
Practicalities
Price. In a platform snapshot of October 2026 the hotel read from about 1,544 yuan a night, and the apartments and guest houses behind it ran from about 440 to 950 yuan a night, the family inn at 440, Hongli at 508, Suiyuan at 588, Sea-View Four Seasons at 701 and Youxian Yage at 948. Every figure is a snapshot that floats, holiday and peak-season rates climb well above these levels, and the platform’s own rate for the day is the only one that counts.
Address. 珠海市香洲区担杆镇外伶仃岛 Zhūhǎi Shì Xiāngzhōu Qū Dāngǎn Zhèn Wàilíngdīng Dǎo, Wailingding Island, Dangan Town, Xiangzhou District, Zhuhai City, administered through the Zhuhai Wanshan Marine Development Experimental Zone. The hotel stands at 清风径 2 号 Qīngfēng Jìng 2 Hào, Qingfeng Lane No. 2, a minute from the pier, and the guest houses and apartments gather along 天祥路 Tiānxiáng Lù, Tianxiang Road, through the renewal blocks and 石涛苑 Shítāo Yuàn, Shitao Court.
Rooms. One property here publishes a room count, the hotel at 49 rooms over four storeys, opened in 2022, with sea-view, garden-view, water-side loft and water-side family suite categories; everything else is an apartment or a family inn, where the usual shapes are a sea-view double or twin, a tatami room, a three-bedroom flat for four and a screening room with a projector or a bath. Ask for the block and the floor, since the same category appears in several buildings of the renewal quarter, and confirm whether breakfast is served, because the hotel does not provide it.
Getting there. Sail from 香洲港客运站 Xiāngzhōu Gǎng Kèyùnzhàn, the Xiangzhou Port Passenger Terminal, on the Qiaolü Middle Road north embankment: about 70 minutes, several sailings a day, 140 yuan ordinary, 175 first and 200 VIP, with a direct line from Shekou in Shenzhen reported by platforms at about 70 minutes. Buy through the operator’s official account or at the counter with identity documents, one person to one ticket, six tickets to an order at most, and allow about 40 minutes at the quay for parking and boarding, since the car park is busy at peak times. The island bans outside vehicles, so park on the mainland and move about on foot or by sightseeing cart, and check the sailing on the day, because wind and swell can suspend it.

Where to stay: the 49-room hotel if a pool and a short walk to the ferry are what you want, an apartment in the Lingding Bay renewal blocks if your group needs three bedrooms and a kitchen, and a family inn from about 440 yuan if the fare has already cost enough, because on 外伶仃岛 Wàilíngdīng Dǎo, Wailingding Island, the ticket is the gate and the wind decides whether you sleep at all.
flowcloud would say that the only honest hotel review on this island is a sailing schedule, and that the correct way to sleep on Wailingding is in a pool-side room booked only after the boat was confirmed, because a place that rations its own water and power has already told you what kind of stay it is.
