文笔峰 Wénbǐ Fēng is the hill in 龙湖镇 Lónghú Zhèn, 定安县 Dìng’ān Xiàn, and 玉蟾宫 Yùchán Gōng, the Palace of the Jade Toad, is the Taoist complex on its slope. The peak is one of the two 山 of the county’s 一城两山一湖一泉, it has been a national 4A scenic area since 2012, and it is the ancestral court of Taoism’s southern school in Hainan, where 白玉蟾 Bái Yùchán, the fifth patriarch, is said to have retired from the world. That retirement is the temple’s own tradition rather than something a register carries, and 南宗祖庭, ancestral court, is how the site describes itself.
The beds come in two generations and the older one is the more interesting. 居善观 Jūshànguān is the temple’s own guesthouse group, cut out of the former 文笔书院 Wénbǐ Shūyuàn, and it is arranged in two clusters: 逸居 Yìjū, a terrace of linked rooms facing the street, and 桂园 Guìyuán, a group set around a raised garden. The architecture mixes 徽派 huī pài merchant-house detail with Taoist temple form, and the group holds 42 rooms. There is a restaurant, a bar and meeting rooms, plus the two things a Taoist house is expected to sell: 道家养生, Taoist health practice, and 中医理疗, Chinese medical treatment.
The official recognition on the group is easy to state and worth stating. 定安文笔峰居善观逸居民宿 was graded a silver rural guesthouse, 银宿级 yín sù jí, in the province’s third round of rural guesthouse assessment, announced on 15 October 2021, one of eighteen silver awards picked from forty-one entries. The opening date, by contrast, cannot be stated. The county government’s own report describes a ceremony on the morning of 18 December; the page it sits on is dated 22 October 2020; and the booking platforms date the 桂园 cluster to 2019. Three accounts, one building, and no way to choose between them, so this article prints all three and chooses none.
The second generation is a resort, and it is new. 海南文笔峰梦境旅休度假村 Hǎinán Wénbǐ Fēng Mèngjìng Lǚxiū Dùjiàcūn opened in 2026 with 121 rooms on site 02 inside the scenic area, a tenth of a kilometre from the peak and from the south gate. It is sold as a high-grade property with an outdoor pool, fishing, a meeting hall, terraces, laundry and free parking, and its room names are the best piece of design in the county: 逸居 rooms called 休息 and 养息, 桂园 rooms called 静心 and 养心, and 琼楼 apartments called 养元. Rest, repose, quiet heart, nourished heart, nourished origin: the floor plan reads as a prescription.
What the Rooms Are Like
A room at 文笔峰 is a temple room, and the two grades differ more in age than in comfort. The 居善观 clusters are converted academy buildings with thick walls, small windows and a courtyard, some of them with a kitchen; the resort is a modern block with a lift, a kettle and a garden or a mountain window, and its smallest 逸居 double is about 20 square metres while the twin runs 35 to 40. What you really buy by sleeping inside the gate is the evening, because guests describe having the whole complex to themselves once the day visitors leave. The county town is fifteen kilometres away and the airport about 44.
Practicalities
Price. On 29 September 2026 the older cluster was the cheaper bed: 定安文笔峰桂园民宿 was listed from about 363 yuan a night, rated 4.6 to 4.7 across 22 to 26 reviews, while 定安居善观民宿 carried about 4.0 across 61 reviews. The 2026 resort listed from 598 yuan on one platform and 899 on another, with a 4-star label that is a platform description and not an official grading. Two operating entities sell these rooms separately on the booking sites, which is why the 42 rooms of the group and the 121 of the resort are quoted in different places.
Address. The rooms are inside 文笔峰盘古文化旅游区 on 丁湖路 Dīnghú Lù in 龙湖镇 Lónghú Zhèn, 定安县 Dìng’ān Xiàn, about 15 kilometres from the county town and an hour’s drive from 海口 Hǎikǒu. The 逸居 cluster faces the street, 桂园 sits 180 metres north-east of the 观音殿 Guānyīn Diàn, the Hall of Guanyin, and the resort is on site 02. Electric carts inside the park rent for about 50 yuan an hour and there is parking at the gate, which matters because nothing here is walkable from anywhere else.
Rooms. Ask whether you are booking the temple guesthouse or the resort, because both are described as staying at 文笔峰 and they are different nights. Ask about the vegetarian kitchen and the night market at the gate, which runs from 17:00 to 22:00 with Hainan snacks and 琼剧, Qiong opera, for about 40 yuan a head, because the complaint that recurs in the reviews is that food inside the park is thin. And ask whether your dates fall in the New Year crush, when the county’s own description of the hill at 春节 is that it is packed shoulder to shoulder.
Getting there. There is no railway station in 定安县 Dìng’ān Xiàn and the island’s high-speed line never enters the county, so the approach is 海口东站 Hǎikǒu Dōng Zhàn or 海口美兰国际机场 Hǎikǒu Měilán Guójì Jīchǎng and then a car, about 40 minutes in all; the resort is 44.3 kilometres from the airport, and the park 48.8 from 琼海站 Qiónghǎi Zhàn. The entrance is on 丁湖路, the 4A grading dates from 2012, and the park is run by 海南中野旅游产业发展有限公司 Hǎinán Zhōngyě Lǚyóu Chǎnyè Fāzhǎn Yǒuxiàn Gōngsī, whose chairman 陆祥荣 Lù Xiángróng undertook at the opening to donate three yuan for every room sold to a fund for the county’s poorer students.
Where to stay: a room at 居善观 Jūshànguān inside 文笔峰盘古文化旅游区 in 龙湖镇 Lónghú Zhèn, 定安县 Dìng’ān Xiàn, if you want the courtyard and the silver-graded guesthouse, and a room at 海南文笔峰梦境旅休度假村 if you want the pool and the lift, either of which puts you inside the gate after the day visitors have gone. Come for the lantern festival, stay two nights, and take the 79.9-yuan joint ticket that pairs the peak with 香草田园 Xiāngcǎo Tiányuán ten minutes down the road.
flowcloud would say that a hill which has been selling incense for centuries has finally worked out that the way to keep a pilgrim is to give him a bed inside the gate, and that the correct way to sleep here is to take the old academy room rather than the new resort, because the point of 文笔峰 is the two hours on either side of closing time.
