Wenchang Beachfront Minsu

There is a stretch of coast on the north-eastern shore of 海南 Hǎinán, around the town of 文昌 Wénchāng, that feels a world away from the busy resorts of the island’s south. Here the sea is a little rougher, the coconut trees lean over the sand, and a simple beachfront 民宿 mínsù (guesthouse) is all you need for a good few days. It is the kind of place where the main activity is watching the tide come in.

Wenchang is known across Hainan for two things: its famous chicken, and its beaches. The coast here is not as crowded or developed as 三亚 Sānyà, which is precisely the point. The guesthouses are mostly small, family-owned places with simple rooms and a fine view of the sea.

The rooms

A typical Wenchang beachfront minsu has a handful of rooms, each with a bed, air conditioning, and a balcony that faces the water. The best rooms open straight onto the sea, so you can fall asleep to the sound of the surf. Breakfast is usually a simple affair of rice congee and local dishes, and the hosts are often glad to point you toward the best place for a fresh seafood dinner.

From the sand the guesthouses barely show: a cluster of small roofs with blue-green tiling tucked in among the palms, half-hidden by the trunks and the foliage around them. It is a low, leafy way to stay, where the buildings are fewer than the trees and the walk from bed to beach is a few steps under the shade.

Around the coast

The beach itself is what you come for — wide, sandy, and shaded by coconut palms. From here you can drive along the coastal road, stopping at quiet coves, and you are also within easy reach of the area’s famous chicken restaurants and the historic architecture of the old town. The pace is slow, and evenings are spent eating seafood and watching the sunset over the water.

Practicalities

Wenchang is on the north-eastern coast of Hainan, around an hour from the capital, 海口 Hǎikǒu, by road, and it has its own high-speed rail station. The guesthouses are along the beach and are reasonably priced, with the sea-facing rooms the first to sell out in the high season. It is an easy and rewarding alternative to the resort towns of the south.

Where to stay: 文昌 Wénchāng is on the north-eastern coast of 海南 Hǎinán, about an hour from 海口 Hǎikǒu by road and served by high-speed rail. Beachfront 民宿 mínsù are strung along the sand, most of them family-run with simple sea-facing rooms at modest prices. This is Hainan at its least polished and most restful — come for the beach, the coconut palms, and the famous Wenchang chicken. Flowcloud would say that Wenchang remembers how to do a beach holiday without a crowd, and it is glad you found it. Book a sea-facing room, and let the surf set the pace.
